Teaching goals: 1.

To learn more about the ancient Olympic Games. 2.

To learn to imagine and write an ending of an unfinished passage. 3.

To develop Ss’ listening and speaking ability. Teaching procedures: Step1. Leading-in Purpose: To stimulate Ss’ interest in this story. Enjoy a song about Olympics. Talk about the 29th Olympics held in China. Appreciate some pictures of the women champions to lead the Ss to the topic: women were not allowed to take part in ancient Olympics. Step2. Skimming Purpose: To get a brief understanding of the passage. Listen to the story while reading the passage to find out the relationship among the characters in it. Step3. Careful-reading Purpose: To make the Ss further understand the text. Read the text again and try to answer the following questions: 1.What was Atlanta’s problem? 2.What were Atlanta’s rules? 3.What did Hippomenes think of the men who ran the race? 4.Why did Hippomenes change his mind? 5.Whom did Hippomenes turn to for help? Step4. Discussing Purpose: To arouse the Ss’ interest in listening to the end of the story.

To learn to imagine and write an end of a story. Topic:

Will Hippomenes win the race ? Step5. Pre-listening Purpose: To help the Ss review the order of the story and be prepared to listen to the end of it. Try to work out the order of the following sentences in Ex3 on Page15. Step6. While-listening

Purpose:

To develop Ss’ listening and speaking ability.

Listen to the ending of the story, check the Ss’

guesses and encourage them to write down the main idea in one sentence. 2.

Listen again and fill in the blanks in Ex.5 on P15. Step7. Talking Purpose: To make the Ss understand the story better.

To develop their speaking ability. What can we learn from this story？

Give the Ss some key words to develop their ideas. After the Ss’ discussion, the teacher makes a summary. Step8. Homework Required:

Write an essay about what you have learned from the story.(100-120) Optional:
