【Analysis of the material】

The words and expressions are from PEP NSEFC Module 9 Unit1----Breaking Records. The topic of this unit is record breaking, telling several stories of breaking Guinness World Records. Through learning this unit students are supposed to recognize the spirit of determination and perseverance in accomplishing goals based on the given facts. Therefore, the words and expressions involved in this period are all presented based on some achievements of Guinness World Records. Students are supposed to learn different dimensions of the words and expressions and to practice using them properly and correctly in various exercises.

【Analysis of the students】

As senior two students, they have learned English for at least 5 years and have already acquired a certain number of words and expressions, which intellectually get them prepared for classroom activities. In addition, students have gained some background knowledge concerning Guinness World Records and record-breaking stories, so they are familiar with the language contexts in which words and expressions to be learnt in this period are presented, thus making it easier for them to figure out the meanings and usage of the words.

On the other hand, many students still don’t have a thorough grasp of the words and expressions as regards the pronunciation, spelling, meaning, derived words and collocations, etc., so they still need more detailed instructions and practice through doing diverse exercises. Inspired by the spirit advocated in Guinness World Records, they are eager to hold their own competitions to experience the fierce atmosphere while outputting their language knowledge acquired for consolidation. During the process students develop the awareness of competition and a sense of glory.
