Book 4 Unit 2 ①

Today I'll share with you a story of a tribe in Vietnam, whose residents mostly lived in the mountainous area. They suffered a lot from hunger a decade ago, as they had no spare space to expand

their farmland and their farming techniques were out of date. It was such a disturbing problem that the chief of the tribe determined to recruit some capable experts to improve their production.

②

The notice said “Your nationality

or occupation

doesn’t count. Your personality

and capability are our first consideration. You must be brave and tough enough to fight in any battle

because you may be challenged by some stubborn people. You must be a selfless person who is willing to sacrifice the freedom

to use your own time. You must be careful enough to solve any statistic problems

④

An expert caught sight of the advertisement by chance

and determined to apply for

the position, promising that he could contribute to

both the industrial

and agricultural development. But at first, he needed to take a field trip. The chief welcomed him warmly.

⑤

Equipped with necessities, he set off with his assistants and the local guides. After putting up his tent at the foot of the mountain, he struggled to climb the mountain. He determined to get over all hardships, including being sunburnt. He had to

focus on his way with great attention because the path leading to

the top was rough but not smooth and the sharp bends were also

challenging. To make matters worse,

they were likely to come across poisonous snakes, so he had to be extremely cautious. Eventually, they arrived at the destination safely and the expert got down to his research instantly.

⑥

⑦

He found that the soil was too fertile for the growth of grains and the roots of the soybeans were mostly spoiled. After consulting the local residents, he figured out that they used too much fertilizer and other chemical

substances and thus ruined the quality of the soil. The discovery encouraged the expert a lot.

Instantly, he wrote a research report, analyzing the causes and mentioning the solution.

⑧

The chief skimmed the essay, underlined the -key points and made a brief summary. At last he made a comment that he was quite satisfied with the expert’s proposal. But the farmers were confused at whether to follow the idea of the expert or not. Some preferred to stick to their traditional way to taking a risk to adopt the new method. Others would rather

update their old farming way. Then the chief delivered a speech to build up confidence of his people. Consequently, the majority of the residents agree to do as the expert proposed.

⑨

The expert contributed a lot to the circulation

of super

hybrid

rice. He also advised the peasants to reduce the use of pesticides which were used to kill pests and bacteria on the grain, such as corn, wheat and peanut.

⑩

Through their joint effort, the soil got richer in minerals and other nutrition and the output

of the crops doubled. They could even spare food to export to other tribes. The producers of organic

food, who adopted even more updated method, not only earned a large sum of money, but also won better reputation.

⑪

The expert was proud of what he had done, but much to his regret, those residents who ignored his proposal still got poor harvest.
