课程全过程:

With the increasing emphasis on environmental issues in the world, living in harmony with nature has been valued by us. Today, let’s read some integrated reading on this topic. Read the first passage. I will give you three minutes to find the topic sentence of this passage. Passage 1 After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.

Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.

The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations —

major food sources(来源) for the wolf —

grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation(植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park's red foxes, and completely drove away the park's beavers.

As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets. The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a

valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.

Time is up. The topic sentence of the passage is after years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. The topic sentence is at the beginning of the first paragraph. So when we read this type of passage, we should pay more attention to the first sentence of the whole passage or each paragraph. The passage is developed by the order of time. Fill in the blanks. Some may be related to what’s the state of gray wolves? Or what happened to them?

When we do reading comprehension, we could meet six types of questions, such as, the detailed information of some sentences; what’s the main idea of the passage? what’s the author’s attitude? what can we infer from the passage? what does some words mean? and where would this passage most probably appear? After we know the outline of the passage, we should answer some questions. let’s see which kind of questions the author will ask us.

1. What is the text mainly about?

D A: Wildlife research in the United States. B: Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.

C: The conflict between farmers and gray wolves. D: The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.

2.What is the author’s attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?

B

A: Doubtful.

B: Positive.

C: Disapproving.

D: Uncaring. Which sentence is the basis for selecting this option? Or which words?Valuable After we finish the passage, we know the author will ask us “main idea” and “attitude” questions.

Let’s go to the second passage. You will read it by two questions. The first one is how the passage is divided into three parts? The second one is to summarize the main idea of each part.

Passage 2 Last night’s meteor(流星)shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead. “My family was so frustrated,”admitted town resident Duane Cosby. “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”

Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it. There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating(迁徙的)birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”

Countless more animal casualties(伤亡)result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person’s chances of getting cancer.

Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting

regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

Why did you divide it like that? P.1-3

The theme of the article is imported by not watching a metror. The light pollution affected the astronomers to watch the meteor shower.(identify problems) P.4-5 The light pollution affects other living things.(analyze problems) P.6

The light pollution affects other living things.(solve problems)

Passage 3 When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually

thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too. Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the canopy(树冠) of taller native trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits. Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local wildlife habitat. Native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者) in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there. Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂) are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat the coffee plants, but then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink. Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as “shade grown” and “bird friendly.” Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we’re paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it’s worth it.

A question:

Which opinion does the author agree with?

B A. People should buy full-sun coffee. B. Shade-grown coffee should be supported. C. Farmers should change the places to grow coffee. D. Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting. After we finish the reading part, let’s review some phrases about this topic.

1.环境保护

People have destroyed the environmental conditions in some areas for their own development, if we want to live in an exciting world every day, with the sun shining brightly, green trees growing and flowers coming out. We can give a speech on how to take measures to solves environmental problems.

Writing

假定你是李华,你校即将举行主题为“Let’s go green now”的英语演讲比赛。请你用英语写一篇演讲稿,要点包括:

1.倡导绿色生活的原因;

2.实践途径(至少三点)。

注意:1. 词数100左右

2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯

First, think about the outline of the composition. We can divide the passage into three parts. The first paragraph is about why we should go green. The second paragraph is the ways of going green. The last paragraph is the ending.

Boys and girls,

I’m honored to give the speech. With the development of society and economy, the number of private cars is increasing at a surprising speed. As we all know, cars give off poisonous gas such as carbon dioxide, causing global warming, frequent natural disasters, diseases and so on. In order to protect our environment, it is high time that we should go green.

Firstly, we should raise people’s awareness of the importance of going green. Secondly, using public transportation or riding bicycles instead of using private cars can make a great difference to the problem. What’s more, we should take full advantage of water, electricity, paper, food and so on. Last but not least, it is a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life.
