分析：

此句中“with nothing to eat”是“with+宾语+to do”构成的复合结构，在句中作状语。其中to do 作宾补，表将要发生的动作。表示动作已发生时，应用：with+宾语+doing/done. With so much work to do, I don’t know what to start with. 有如此多的工作要做，我不知道该先做什么。

1). Pick out 挑出，分辨出

She was picked out from thousands of applicants for the job. 从数千申请人中挑选出她来做这份工作

2). 句中的as if they were spaghetti 和as if it were the finest steak是从属连词as if 引导的方式状语从句。as if 等于as though, 意思是“就像….似的，仿佛……似的”。as if 引导的从句，若表示很可能的事实用陈述语气，若表示与事实有可能相反就用虚拟语气。

E.g.陈述语气

The animal was walking as if/though its leg was hurt. 这动物走路的样子好像腿受了伤。

She spoke to me as if/though she knew me. 她和我说话的神情，好像她早就认识我。

虚拟语气

He talks as if/though he knew everything.他说起话来好像什么都知道似的。

He behaved as if/though nothing had happened. 他装作若无其事的样子。

3). Cut sth off/ cut off sth 切下，割下，砍下

Mind you don’t cut your fingers off/ cut off your fingers. 小心别切断了手指头。

Cut sb/sth off (常用于被动语态)：

停止向某人供应某物，使某人或某事物与外界隔绝。

If you don’t pay your gas bill soon you may be cut off. 你若不立即付清煤气费，就要停止向你供气。

The children were cut off by the incoming tide. 涨潮把孩子们困住了。
