Learning about

attributive clauses

what is an adjective clause? An adjective clause is a dependent clause which takes the place of an adjective in another clause or phrase. Like an adjective, an adjective clause modifies a noun or pronoun, answering questions like “which?”

or “what kind of?”

Consider the following examples: Adjective :

the red coat

Adjective clause :

the coat which I bought yesterday Like the word “red”

in the first example, the dependent clause “which I bought yesterday”

in the second example modifies the noun “coat.”

Note that an adjective clause usually comes after what it modifies, while an adjective usually comes before. Eg: The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow -brown

colour like honey. What is a non- restrictive attributive clause?

T introduces a sentence taken from the reading passage:

This gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because almost seven thousand tons of amber were used to make it. Explain the differences between restrictive and non -restrictive attributive clauses A non-restrictive clause simply adds more information into the sentence

and does not affect the meaning of the main clause:

it is therefore bracketed off with commas

Conversely, a restrictive clause defines its referent in the main clause more specifically and contributes significantly to the meaning of the sentence. Let the students go through the text to find all the clauses.

Step 3: Practice Ask some Ss to do the exercises on the blackboard:Exercise 3 on Page 4 and check the answers together to make sure they have mastered the restrictive clauses and the non-restrictive attributive clause. Step 4 Homework.

Finish Exercise 4 on Page 4.
