Teaching Plan for Reading and Listening NSEC Book 2 Unit 2 The story of Atlanta By Deng Yunhui
Sanya No.1 Middle School Analysis of teaching material: The content of this lesson is New Senior English for China Student’s Book 2 Unit 2 the fourth period The story of Atlanta. This text is a narrative, clear in structure and concise in language. It extends the main topic “the Olympic Games” of this unit. Set in the ancient Greece where women were not allowed to take part in the Olympic Games, taking the race between Hippomenes and Princess Atlanta as the main line, this text involves many topics such as religious belief, competition spirit, equality between men and women, true love. The story is divided into two parts. The first part is reading comprehension and the second one is listening training. The reading passage mainly depicts a bargain Atlanta made with her father and how Hippomenes asked for help from the Greek Goddess of Love but it doesn’t tell us the ending of the story, so only after listening the rest part of the story can we unravel the suspense. Therefore, I will design a variety of class activities involving reading, listening and speaking to help my students grasp the plot of the story, learn to predict outcomes and understand its main idea. Besides that, I’ll encourage them
1
to express their ideas creatively and guide them to have a better understanding of the Olympic spirits. Analysis of target students:
40 students in Senior One from Sanya No.1 Middle School. They are in adolescence and are full of expectations for love stories, so it is easy to mobilize their learning enthusiasm. Before this class they have learned the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympic Games, which contributes to helping them understand the background knowledge of this ancient Greek myth and clearing some obstacles for the next reading. Although they have the basic abilities of reading, listening and speaking, they still need more opportunities to practice what they have learned, to express their ideas and develop their learning ability. According to the learning situation of my students, I will encourage them to take an active part in class activities where they can discuss, communicate and cooperate with each other, so as to acquire knowledge, skills and emotional experience and develop their abilities.
Teaching Aims:
1. Knowledge Aims: 1) Enable the students to learn an ancient Greek myth. 2) Enable the students to master key words and expressions such as princess, prince, glory, promise, make a bargain, hopeless, foolish,
change one’s mind, go away, one after another, pick up.
2
2. Ability Aims: 1) Get the students to learn
to predict
the possible content of a text through some pictures. 2) Help the students improve their reading ability and learn to adopt reading skills such as skimming, scanning, guessing the new words, information-gathering in their reading. 3) Help the students improve their listening ability and learn to gain useful information from the listening material. 4) Help the students improve their speaking ability through the role-play activity.
3. Emotional Aims: 1) Inspire the students' love for ancient Greek culture. 2) Get the students to have a further understanding of the Olympic spirits. Teaching important points:
1. Instruct the students to master the content of the story.
2. Guide the students to understand the relationship between the story and the topic “the Olympic Games”.
Teaching difficult point: How to lead the students to understand the theme of the story. Teaching method: Activity-based English Learning Teaching Aids:
