A Modern inventions have speeded up people’s loves amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in about an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts (吹嘘) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks. All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind on another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientist; too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about. However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activities that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world. There was a time when some people’s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestor faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence. 1. The new products become more and more time-saving because . A. our love of speed seems never-ending B. time is limited. C. the prices are increasingly high. D. the manufactures boast a lot. 2. What does “the days” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. Imaginary life B. Simple life in the past. C. Times of inventions D. Time for constant activities. 3. What is the author’s attitude towards the modern technology?

A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative. 4. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The present and past times. B. Machinery and human beings. C. Imaginations and inventions. D. Modern technology and its influence. B

Wugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user. By using everyclick.com, which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny. Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity—

88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income. 19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short term debts of more than 5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing (有感染力的) or possible. Beth Truman, a 21 year old recent university graduate, has used Everyclick.com to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”

Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding. Everyclick.com works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. Everyclick.com then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. Launched in June 2005, everyclick.com is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK. 5. According to the passage, “wugging” is actually . A. a website B. a charity-related action C. a school organization D. a student movement 6. In the case of charity, Everyclick.com . A. frees students of the financial B. receives much money from students worries C. offers valuable information to D. praises students for their students money-raising 7. What does Beth Truman think of the “wugging” movement? A. It makes Everyclick.com popular in the UK. B. It becomes easy to do charity because of it. C. It results in students’ more social awareness.

D. It helps students to save money. 8. From the passage, we can conclude that . A. most full time students do charity on the Internet every day B. Everyclick.com helps students pay for the college education

C. “wugging” is a win-win idea for both students and charities D. Everyclick.com is the most successful search engine in the UK

1. whispered 2. mountainous 3. reacted 4. amused 5.drunk. II.

1. brought out his sense of responsibility. 2. whispering about over there 3. can be treated with 4. react to your idea 5. happened to 6. a vast amount of (二)能力提升自测

receive“收到,接待”;treat“对待”;amuse sb.“使某人高兴”。

cut in“插话”;cut down“压缩、砍伐”;cut out“中断、中途熄

火、剪下图样”;cut up“切碎”;

treat sb. to sth.“以某物款待某人、给某人买(可享受的)东西”;treat sb. as“把某人当作…对待”;supply sth. to sb./supply sb. with sth.“为某人提供某物”。

treat vt.

lead to“导致;致使”。the thief’s being caught为动词-ing短语,相当于名词,作to的介词宾语。

leave sb/ sth. doing“让某人或某物处于某种状态”。

Occasion“特别的事情,如仪式或庆典之类”;scene“(尤指不愉快事件发生的)地点;现场,如犯罪现场或车祸现场”;situation“情况;形式;局面”;circumstance“条件;环境”。on the occasion在那时;on scene在现场;in the situation在那种情况下;in/under the circumstances在那种条件下。

C答案可修改为定语从句,who is speaking;to speak表示“将要发生的动作”,而has spoken表示“已完成的动作”,不符合题意,故排除。

tiring“令人疲倦的”;tired“感到疲倦的”。

Astonishing“令人吃惊的”;astonished“感到吃惊的”。

Perhaps the days are long gone ….“也许, 我们静静聆听广播里的故事节目, 任想象插上翅膀肆意翱翔的日子, 已经一去不返了”。

critical“批判的”;objective“客观的”;optimistic“乐观的”;negative“消极的”。

从第三段中“it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity”可知,B项正确。
