Unit 3 Australia Ⅰ. Teaching Objectives

Language knowledge Objective 

1. Students get to know several aspects of Australia and retell the information in their own words, including main cities and tourist attractions. 

2. Students are able to be familiar with the words associated with the material, including unique ecology, citizenship, spectacular, out of respect, sacred and so on.

1. Students are able to scan and summarize the different types of the reading material, like advertisement, travel brochure.

2. Student are able to get important information quickly and summarize it in a concise way.

Warming up :A small quiz ( students are divided into 6 groups) T: When someone mentions the word“Australia”, what may come to your mind first? S1:Kangaroos S2: Koalas S3: Sydney opera house

S4: Gold Coast...... T: Amazing. You do know something about Australia. Now I’d like you to do a small quiz, each choosing one number and guess. Which Group goes first? Volunteer? G1: number 3 T: a chain of coral reefs(珊瑚) stretching along the coast of Queensland, famous for its abundant（丰富的) tropical fish and corals. What is it? If you know the answer, stand up and say it out loud. G1: Great Barrier Reef. T: well-done. Next Group? ......( after all six groups get the right guesses) T: guys, you’ve done a good job. Now would you take a look at the pictures on your text book and match the numbers with the places. (ppt shows the correct match) Step 2 Pre-reading Get the students to do the task in Pre-reading by glancing at the passage quickly. T: could you get the main idea of each text within the group? I’d like to give you some tips---looking at the titles/pictures/bold words. (After a few minutes) Ss: ( show the right answers). Text 1: a general description of Australia

Brainstorming+detailed reading（text1）

Get the students to brainstorm what aspects they may cover when introducing a country. T1:population; T2: area;T3: language... Let’s turn to Text1 to answer the questions. T: What aspects are covered in text 1? Discuss in groups and share with each other.

Get the students to notice the first of part text 2 to know the characteristic of a newspaper? T: read Text 2 carefully with the given four questions about when, who, why and how. S1: 26, January S2: Those who come from overseas from different cultural and social backgrounds. S3: To encourage tolerance, respect and friendship among all the Australians 3.Scanning and discussion (text 3) T: Good! With its uniqueness and openness, Australia attract many visitors.Let’s move to Text 3 and read the title, do you believe we are advised to travel by plane or by train?

Ts: By train. T: Then what are the two railway routes? Would you please draw on you group map? T: well done! Now let’s discuss what’s the meaning of the title and it’s function? What can be seen along the way? And how are they described? Circle the adjectives. Group*:....... T: good job. 4.Scanning (text 4) T: According to the picture, what’s to be talked about in the postcard? Ss: Uluru. T: could you find the basic information about Uluru? Uluru is a world _______; stands______ in height; changes colors and where ______ people have lived. T: yes, we’ve already known it changes colors, let’s enjoy a short video. T:(after 40 seconds) Amazing, right? Do people climb the rock? Why not? Ss: out of respect for aboriginals who consider the rock to be sacred. T: yes, that’s the respect for the aboriginal culture.

Post-reading T: Now we’ve finished the passage. I’d like you to prepare three questions about Australia according to the passage and then interview another group. Or simply prepare an interview within your group.
