Learning ability: Get students to practice their, reading, speaking and writing skills. 3.

Thinking ability: Get students to understand the text based on English humour 4.

Cultural awareness: Get students to know about different types of jokes and English culture

Teaching focuses: 1.

Teaching key point: Students can understand different types of jokes and let students to discuss their funny stories or create a joke by themselves.

Teaching difficulty: Enable the students to write some types of English humour and Chinese humour. 3.

Teaching methods: Task-based Method, Communicative Approach Teaching procedures: Stage 1 Lead-in (5 mins) Show students a group of Chinese jokes and ask them to explain why it is funny to lead in the topic and arose their interests.

Stage 2 Jokes Reading (5 mins) 1.

Explain the definition “play on words” to students. 2.

Let the students read the three jokes and match the joke with the explanations.

Stage 3 Funny story reading (5 mins) 1.

Ask students to read the story between Holmes and Waston. 2.

Let students change the story into a dialogue and act it out.

Stage 4 Speaking (5 mins) 1.

Ask students which of these two kinds of jokes do they like better and give reasons. 2.

Ask students to talk about their own funny stories or experiences with their partners and share with the classmates. 3.

Give a situation to students and ask them to imagine what is going to happen next. Then work with their group mates to create a funny story with the given situation.

Step 5 Writing (18 mins) 1.

Ask students to finish their writing within 120 to 150 words based on the group discussion Outline: Para. 1Background information of the story
