Teaching aims 1.

Ss can discover some kinds of "play on words" on their own through reading materials, like riddle, tongue twister, joke pun, etc 2.

After this class, Ss will pay attention to the punchline in the English jokes

Ss get to know some words, like: amuse, amusing, pancake explanation, detective, Sherlock Holmes, mountainous whisper, vast, mushroom, riddle, tongue twister, joke, pun,fever, fee, memory, etc 4.

By independent study and cooperative research, Ss can automatically practice reading and speaking Teaching Important points 1. Ss know and enjoy some kinds of"play on words"especially jokes. 2. Ss can find the punchline in a joke 3. Get Ss interested in reading and speaking Teaching difficult points 1. Ss read the card, understand it in short time and do the task 2. Ss read 3 jokes on the book and find the explanations to them 3. Ss read, remember and retell the short joke to their partners Teaching procedure Step 1 Revision Check the homework exercises. Step 2 Leading-in Ask students what “play on words ” is. Do some “play on words ” with students. Step 3 Enjoying English jokes Ask students to read the customer and waiter jokes and match the joke with the explanation. Let them read the jokes aloud to the tapes, pay attention to the rhythm and intonation and then tell them to each other. Have some of them tell the jokes to the class. Step 4 Enjoying the funny story of Holmes and Watson Ask students rend and enjoy the story. Have them discuss the question: Which of the two kinds of jokes do you like better? Why? Ask some of them to report their ideas to the class. Step 5 Dialogue Let students change the story of Holmes and Watson into a dialogue and act it out in groups of three—Holmes, Watson and a narrator. Ask as many groups as possible to perform their dialogue to the class and see who can bring out the humor. Step 6 Workbook Reading task (on Page 59) Ask students to read the passage. Deal with any language problems that students can’t solve by themselves while checking their understanding.

Let them read the passage again and try to fill in the Exercise 3 on Page 60. Have them discuss the following question. Why did people believe the program Panorama on April 1st, 1957? Go over the answers with the class. Step 7 Consolidation Ask students to retell the customer and waiter jokes and the story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in their words. Have students retell the passage An April Fool’s Joke: the Noodle Harvest in their own words. Step 8 Homework Finish off the workbook exercises. Be ready to present other English jokes or funny stories.
