Knowledge and Skills: Enable the students to know the cause and effects of global warming. 2.
过程与方法Process and Methods: [来源:Z&xx&k.Com]
Through skimming and scanning, improve the students’
reading comprehension and reading skills. 3.
Emotions and Values:
Get the students know more about global warming and try to protect the environment.

Step 1. Lead-in List things that consume energy: Lights, television, cassette player, computer, fridge, microwave, washing machine, hairdryer, air conditioner Step 2. Pre-reading: 1. What is a greenhouse? A greenhouse is made of glass and is used for growing plants, especially during cold weather. 2. How does it work? The air inside is warm because the glass traps the heat from the
sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period. 3. What are the “greenhouse gases”?
[来源:学科网]In the atmosphere surrounding the earth there are gases called “greenhouse gases”, including carbon dioxide, methane (甲烷, 沼气) and water vapor. 4. What do you think greenhouse gases do? They trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm. Step 3. Fast Reading: Answer the questions: 1. Who wrote the magazine article? 2. What is the name of the magazine? 3. What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article? 4. What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another? 5. What is the main topic of the article? Step 4. Careful reading Task 1: Read each paragraph and answer the questions. Para1 1. Why is the earth becoming warmer?
Para2&3 1. What view do all scientists subscribe to about global warming? 2. What are greenhouse gases? What do they consist of? What can they be used for? What is their important part? 3. What would happen if there were not greenhouse gases in the earth? 4. What will happen if we add too quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere? 5. Have the levels of carbon dioxide increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years? 6. Who made accurate measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997? 7. How did the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere change during this period? Para 4&5 1. What do all scientists agree that results in the increase in carbon dioxide? 2. How does Dr. Janice Foster say the temperature in the earth over the next 100 years? 3. Who thinks the rise of temperature would be a catastrophe? Why? 4. Who are opposed to this view? Why? Para 6 1. Will the temperature decrease if we start reducing the amount of
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases? 2. Does that mean we should do nothing? Task 2: True or False. 1. The temperature in the last century did not seem to increase much. 2. Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. 3. Janice Foster believes that she can measure the future global rise in temperature. 4. The rise in carbon dioxide is causing a steady increase in global warming. 5. George Hambley believes that global warming will do good rather than harm to the earth. 6. It is clear what the effects of global warming will be. Task 3: Choices. 1. Who found out the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1977? A. Dr. Janice Foster. B. Charles Keeling. C. George Hambley. D. Sophie Armstrong. 2. “But there are some very different attitudes among scientists towards this issue.”
"Issue" here means the same as the one in________. A. I bought the new stamp the day of its issue.
B. They are talking about one of the key issues in the election campaign. C. The government is expected to issue a statement about the election. D. The magazine has 12 issues each year. 3. The author probably agrees that ________ A. actually global warming is good for man. B. we should do nothing about the global warming. C. catastrophes will happen if the globe keeps on warming. D. a lot remains to be found out about the effects of global warming. 4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A. The temperature of the earth increased about one degree Fahrenheit during the 20th century. B. The carbon dioxide content in the air increased by 70 parts per million from 1957 to 1997. C. All scientists accept the data in graph 2 except Charles Keeling.
D. Janice Foster says that more carbon dioxide will make plants grow faster. 5. Which of the following is Dr Janice Foster’s opinion? A. The result of the temperature increase will be serious. B. The amount of warming is nothing serious. C. We needn’t worry about high levels of carbon dioxide.
D. Global warming is a natural phenomenon. Step 5.Discussion What can we students do to stop global warming and protect the environment? Step 6.
