Teaching Procedures Step 1. Warming up Play a video of snakes winding around houses in Australia and have a free talk like this:

T: Boys and girls, what did you see in the video? How do you feel about the scene? S1: I saw snakes coming out of somewhere suddenly. It’s scary.

T: Indeed, with so many snakes around, it’s terrifying. What about you?

S2: I think people there live an exciting life. T: Exciting? Yeah, then do you dare to live there? S2: No, I prefer a safer place. T: Okay, thank you. Well, everyone, do you know any other animals in Australia apart from snakes? Ss:Kangaroo. T: Yes, Now let’s turn to Page 27 and learn more creatures in Australia.

Step 2. Pre-reading Look at the title and pictures on Page 27 then ask students: How many creatures are shown? What are they? Are they dangerous or not? Can you predict what the passage is about?

Step 3. While-reading Task 1 Read quickly and find out the numbers or the type of these animals in 1 minute. Creatures Snake Spider Shark Jellyfish Crocodile

Task 2 Read again and answer these questions: 

Are all these creatures poisonous? 

Do they have effects on humans?If so, what effect do they have on humans? Task 3 Read the last paragraph carefully and have a debate about whether Australia is a safe place to live in or not. T: With all these dangerous animals, do you think Australia is a safe place to live in or visit? S: Unsafe. T: Now let’s read the last paragraph carefully and find out whether it’s true that Australia is an unsafe place. (2 minutes later) T: Do you still think Australia is an unsafe place to visit or live in? Or do you want to change your idea? S1: Now I think it’s not a dangerous place?

T: Why do you change your mind? S1: From the last paragraph, I learn that few deaths from these creatures are reported although there’re so many dangerous creatures.

T: Indeed, thank you, What about you? S3: I still hold the view that it’s not a safe place. Although

treatment have been developed, I don’t want to risk being attacked.

T: Yes, we may be in danger if we are in Australia. Then do you know the best ways to protect yourself from each of the dangerous animals?

Step 4 Post-reading Work in groups of four and discuss the best ways to protect yourself from each of the dangerous animals. Offer students some information to help them.

Then choose an animal and make a poster to warn people about it. Offer the students the sample of the poster,

Step 5 Homework Write a letter to your friend Li Hua, who hesitates to go on a camping trip in the Northern Territory in Australia or stay in Sydney. In the letter, you should include following items: 1.

Tell Li Hua what you suggest. 2.

Give each of your reasons in a separate paragraph.
