Unit 2 Working the Land Reading: A Pioneer for All People (New Senior English for Chinese Students)

Ⅰ. Analysis of the teaching materials

This is taken from the New Senior English for Chinese Students’ book4 by PEP. This lesson is designed as a reading lesson, and the reading part of this unit is “A pioneer for all people.” This reading passage is going to talk about Dr Yuan Longping, the farther of the hybrid rice. The purpose of leaning this text is to introduce Dr Yuan and his achievement and dreams by showing a serious world problem---Hunger, and then arouse students the sense of devotion and help them to set Dr Yuan as an good example. By the use of various teaching methods and Discussions, teacher can help to improve students’ independent learning ability and cultivate the cooperative spirit.

Ⅱ . Teaching aims:

（1）Knowledge:

---To lead students think about the world problem---hunger, help students step into new topic naturally from the opposite side. ---To acquaint students with Dr Yuan’s occupation, achievement and dreams. （2）Ability:

--- To elicit students to show their own opinions and describe people’s appearance in their own words.

--- To help students to improve their ability of value choice.

--- To enable students to improve the ability of analyses.

（3）Emotion:

--- To encourage students to express what they want to say. --- To lead students to show their respect to great person and help them to set a correct sense of worth. Ⅲ . Teaching methods and activities: To achieve the teaching aims, various kinds of teaching methods and activities will be employed during this period, such as audio-visual teaching methods, the guided discovery method, TBL (Task-based learning), pair work and group work, which offer students an opportunity to complete the tasks. It can help students to have a better understanding about Dr Yuan by discussing some questions about this topic and learning the paragraph one by one . What’s more, completing the sublimation part can strengthen students’ emotion.

Show a video about Hunger.

Arouse students’

attention and help them get into the lesson smoothly and quickly by showing students a video about the topic we are going to talk ,then put forward some questions and step into the reading part naturally. Pre-reading

Step1: Predict the person we are going to learn. Explain the meaning of a pioneer and ask student to predict what we going to learn.

Step2: Showing the background .

Show students a Dr Yuan’s Picture and lead students to know the honor Dr Yuan have received and his research, Hybrid rice. Then make a comparison between common rice and hybrid rice.

While-reading

Step1: have a further talk about Dr Yuan’s appearance and achievement. Let student read paragraph 1 together, and ask a student to describe Dr Yuan’s appearance in her/his words by looking at Dr Yuan’s picture. So, let student have a image of farmer. Next, ask all of students what Dr Yuan’s achievement is, then let student have a image of scientist. And by doing this job, eliciting students to know Dr Yuan’s occupation.

Step2:have a further talk about Dr Yuan’s dreams .

Ask a volunteer to read the last paragraph for us, then find out Dr Yuan’s dreams in different time. Finally, lead students to have a general idea about Dr Yuan’s sense of devotion and selflessness. Post-reading

Step1: Reading summary.

Use the information we have learned in this lesson to complete the table blank about Dr Yuan. So, we can summarize what have learned today in this way. Step2: Homework. Ask students to gather more information about Dr Yuan's biography（you can do it by searching online or reading in library ) and then analyze Dr Yuan' characteristic. In order to reduce the difficulty, teacher will give an example firstly and then ask students to follow it.

Step3: Theme sublimation.

Appreciate a song, we are the world, the song is made by super star Michael Jackson for hungry people in Africa. By listening this song we can sublimate the theme that is devotion.
