Ⅰ. Analysis of Students:

Senior 1 students have got a good way of learning and a strong desire of seeking knowledge.But their reading and understanding abilities are quite limited ,so it is not vey easy to really understand the reading. Ⅱ. Analysis of Teaching Material: The topic of this unit is mainly about agriculture. This period plays a very important role in the learning of this unit.However,students are not familiar with this topic, so the lesson is a challenge to them. Ⅲ Teaching aims: 1.Knowledge aims: a.words and expressions:hunger,sun-burnt, struggle, output, expand, circulate, rid...of, be satisfied with, lead a ... Life,equip, freedom,would rather b.Let students read the passage and learn about Yuan Longping and his hybrid strain of rice. 2.Ability aims: a.Develop students’s reading abilities like skimming, scanning,understanding, summarizing etc. b.Enable students to talk about Yuan Longping and his hybrid strain of rice. 3.Emotional aims: a.To help students have a better understanding of the great value of the scientific research done by Dr Yuan Longping. b.To get them to learn some noble character from Dr Yuan. c.To cultivate students’ sense of sympathy and humanism. d.To develop students’s sense of cooperative learning. IV Teaching important points: a. Help to comprehend the text and grasp the main idea of the text. b. Grasp the usage of some words and expressions. c. How to help students make up their minds to make contributions to motherland in the future like Dr Yuan. V Teaching difficult points: a. How to help students learn more about agriculture. b. Students-centered teaching approach VII.Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in Give students a picuture of an apple to stand for the earth and explain as follows. 1/4 of our earth is land. Of the land, 1/2 can be used for farming. Of the arable (可耕种的)land, 1/4 is actually used for farming. So,how much of the earth is actually used for farming?

The answer is 1/32. Then tell them that to feed the whole world is not very easy .Especially for China, wo must feed 22% of the human using 7% land on the earth .

设计意图：

苹果代表地球直观形象，学生容易理解。结合图片陈述：地球的1/4是陆地，陆地中有1/2可以被用来耕种，在可耕种的徒弟中，1/4被用于耕种。问题：实际被用以耕种的土地占地球总面积的多少？

学生计算出1/32后，他们就会明白，实际耕种面积非常少。然后提出问题：

怎样才能养活人类？特别是中国，怎样用世界7%的土地养活22% 的人口？

引出：幸亏中国有袁隆平这个先驱人物，他帮中国解决了这个大问题

设计意图：

阅读的目的是为了快速获取有用信息，中文如此英文也不例外。第一遍阅读是略读练习，我要求学生快速浏览，了解文章大意，知道文章是在讲什么主题。同时通过对每段首尾句的关注，抓住每段的中心话题。通过两个题目设置来检验学生是否达到阅读目的，题目设计会比较简单，能表达中心意思即可。
