Module 4 unit 2 Reading A pioneer for all people II.Analysis of teaching material The topic of this unit is about the agriculture and the reading part is a narrative which is about an agricultural pioneer named Yuan Longping who worked hard to produce a new strain of rice. By learning this passage, the students can have a general idea of the scientist, his achievements, influences he had made and his attitudes towards fame, money and life. Ⅲ.Analysis of students

After the learning of Module1 to Module 3, the students have gained some reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, summarizing the main idea of the passage or of each paragraph. They have made progress in reading ability, which is helpful for them to finish the tasks for this reading material. 2.

The writing pattern of this reading is a narrative and it is about a person. As for students in the second term of Grade one, it is not difficult for them to understand. 3.

The students need some skills, such as summarizing strategy; gathering and analyzing the detailed information strategy; group or teamwork strategy, etc. Ⅳ.Design of Teaching Objectives

1. Knowledge objectives

Students can read the words correctly and know the meaning of the words about the agriculture and the phrases. 2. Ability objective

(1)To strengthen the ability to skim, scan and to find out general idea of the passage or each paragraph by the key words or topic sentences quickly and correctly and have a clear idea of the framework and the context of the article.

(2)To strengthen the reading ability and to develop the ability to get helped by the non-linguistic information, such as the pictures.

3. Affective objectives

(1)To help the students to develop a positive attitude to fame, money, and life and to make them realize the importance of saving food and develop their sense of responsibility for others. (2)To strengthen the students’ sense of teamwork and sharing in the process of discussion.

Step I Warming-up and lead in

A test: Some pictures of the agricultural crops and then raise a question: Do you know these plants? What are they? [Design purpose]

To arouse the students’ interest in the lesson by showing some pictures and introduce the topic by mentioning the relationship between rice and Yuan Longping.

Step II. Pre-reading

A quiz: Read a short passage and try to guess “Who is he?” (Yuan Longping) 2.

Look at the title and the picture and try to guess the pattern of the passage.( a narrative) 3.

A question: If you are given the title and some pictures, what will you write? [Design purpose] By the quiz, the pictures and the question, the students are asked to guess the style and the content of the article. In this way, the interest of exploring the passage can be aroused, which is good for the reading steps being carried out smoothly. Step III. While-reading

Task 1 Skimming

Skim the text quickly and try to get the main idea of each paragraph.( 3 minutes) (Then ask one student to match each paragraph with its main idea, then check the answer.) [Design purpose] Skim the text in limited time and deal with the passage as a whole. In this way, the students can have a general idea of each paragraph. To lower the level of difficulty, the exercise is designed in a form of matching, which can not only train the student’s skimming ability but also can arouse the students’ enthusiasm in reading.

Task 2 Listening and scanning After knowing the general idea of the text, listen to the text and pay attention to the pronunciation. Meanwhile, read after the listening and make an information card for Yuan Longping on the screen.(8 minutes) [Design purpose] The information card is adopted from the Exercise 1 in the textbook on Page 11.

Task 3 Careful reading The purpose of careful reading is to develop the students’ ability to get, analyze and deal with the detailed information of the text.

Para 1 Show some pictures of Yuan Longping and ask the students to get which picture or pictures can best show his appearance according to the text. And then fill in some blanks about his appearance and achievements. (5 minutes) 2.

Para 2 The second paragraph is a brief biography of Yun Longping and is written in the time of order. So the students will be given 5 minutes go read the paragraph carefully and do the sorting exercise according to the time order. In addition, there are some difficult words, so the students will be

asked guess the meaning of two words “expand” and “circulate” in the context.

Para 3 The third paragraph is about the personality of Yuan Longping and his hobbies. Some “true or false” exercises will be given to the students and some pictures will be shown and then the students will pick out the ones that are Yuan Longping’s hobbies.

Another picture is can best show Dr. Yuan cares little about money and leads a very simple life. I will ask the students to express their feeling after seeing the picture. (5 minutes) 4.

Para 4 The first sentence is the topic sentence of the 4th paragraph. The students will be asked to find out the dreams of Yuan Longping. I will present the answer with the help of some pictures and the students will fill in the blanks about some details of this part. StepⅣ. Post-reading

Think about why Dr. Yuan wants to export his rice around the globe. 2.

Yuan Longping was able to develop a successful agricultural product when thousands of other farmers could not. What do you think is the main reason for his success? 3.

A poem by Li Shen ( Toiling farmers) [Design purpose] This step is about some activities after reading, through which the students can reflect on the importance of saving food, being educated and having dreams. In this way, the affective goal can be fulfilled. StepⅤ.Homework

Find out the difficult sentences from the text and write a short passage about Charlie Chaplin—A great British humorist. [Design purpose] To have a better understanding of the article and get prepared for the next lesson and next unit.
