Use the sentence pattern to describe shapes of things. Teaching methods

Task-based language teaching method, Phonics Teaching Method and Communicative teaching method will be used in this lesson. Teaching aids

Word cards, pictures, stickers, multimedia and PPT will be prepared before class. Teaching procedures Step 1 Greetings

Teacher greets students as usual. T: Good Morning, boys and girls! Ss: Good morning! T: Nice to see you again! Ss: Nice to see you, too.

T: Ready for class? Ss:Yes.

(Teacher and students greet each other to begin the class.) Step 2 Lead-in

Teacher plays a dialogue for students. Students will listen to the dialogue and answer three questions. T: Here is a dialogue for you, please listen to it and answer these questions. Now please go through the questions. Ss: Ok. (Students go through the questions before listen to the dialogue, and it helps them get familiar with the listening materials.) T: Now please answer these questions. Question one, what does the girl want? S1: She wants an eraser. T: Let’s check the answer. In the dialogue, the girl says that I want an eraser. Yes, you are right. (Teacher shows students the original listening materials on whiteboard and check the answers.) T: Question two, what are the erasers like? S2: They are in all colours and shapes. (Check the answer in the same way.)

T: Boys and girls, please look at the erasers and guess the meaning of “shape”. Ss: It means “形状”。

T:Good! Question three, which eraser does the girl like? S3: She likes the pink one. T: Yes. And why does the girl like the pink eraser? Ss: She says that it looks like a circle. T: Good job! And look at the shape of the pink eraser, it is a circle, so circle is a kind of shape.

(The listening material is chosen from the text of Lesson 9, and it aims to lead to shapes and practice students’

listening comprehension.) Step 3 Present and practice new words and sentences

Teacher presents the new words by showing students erasers and other things in different shapes. At the same time, students will review colours by telling colours of the erasers. T: I have some erasers in different colours and shapes. Let’s have a look. Ss: OK. T: Can you tell me what colour is this eraser. Ss: It’s yellow. T: Yes. And the shape of this eraser is a …

Ss: Circle. T: Great! Please read after me, circle, circle. Ss: Circle, Circle.

( Then Teacher invites some students or groups to read the word.) T: Now please look at this picture, what can you see? S1: I can see the sun. T: Wonderful! And the sun looks like a …

Ss: The sun looks like a circle. T: You got it. Follow me, look like. ( Teacher can use body language to help students understand the meaning of “look like”.) Ss:look like. T: The sun looks like a circle.(Teacher teaches the sentence and lets students get the structure and meaning of it.)

Ss: The sun looks like a circle. T: Ok. How about this picture? Ss: They are moomcakes. T: And they look like circles. Ss: The mooncakes look like circles. ( Pay attention to singular and

pural forms.) (Teach the new words “square”, “rectangle”, “triangle” and “oval” in the same way. As teaching the new words, Teacher will complete some other usages of the words. For example, “square”

has the second meaning in “Tian’anmen Square”, and we can find three angles in a triangle, so “tri-”means “three”.) T: Now boys and girls, please look at these erasers. The left ones

are …

Ss: Red and pink. T: The right ones are …

Ss: Purple, pink and yellow. T: Yes. And the erasers on the left look like our hearts. So we call it a heart. (T shows Ss a picture of heart.) The erasers on the right look like…

Ss: Stars. T: Well done! They look like stars in the sky. So this shape is a star. T: Here’s another picture for you. Let’s see what it is. Wow!It’s a diamond. Do you like it? Ss: Yes. It’s very beautiful. T: Look at this shape, and we also call it a diamond.

(Teacher also shows students some things to practice using the sentence pattern and lets students get familiar with describing shapes.) T: All of you did a very good job. Now let’s read these words on your book. ( Students read the new words together.) T: Ok. Now please read and remember these words by yourselves. Later we will play some games. ( Spare students some time to review the words by themselves.) Teacher makes the things in different shapes into some stickers,

and stick them on the blackboard before class, and students can review shapes by getting and using them. And this is also a way to encourage students to speak English and present themselves. The stickers will be used in the last procedure – to make a book. Step 4 Consolidation

In this part, students will play two games to deepen the impression of words and sentences they have learned in this lesson. T: First, let’ play a memory game. Now here’s a chart. In this chart, there are eight blanks, and there are eight shapes in different colours in them. Number 1 is a blue circle, and Number 2 is a…

Ss: It’s a pink square. Number 3 is a yellow rectangle…

T: Ok. Now please remember the shapes in different colours and numbers. And later they will be disappeared.

( Two minutes for students to remember the chart.) T: Time’ up. Now all the shapes are disappeared. Please tell me what is Number 3? S1: It’s a yellow rectangle. T: Let’s see. Yes, it’s a yellow rectangle. Good job! How about Number 6 and Number 8? S2: Number 6 is a blue star and Number 8 is a purple diamond. T: Well done!

(This part will help students to memorize colours and shapes.)

T: Let’s play another game. In this game, you need to find the right shape from this bag, but your eyes will be covered. For example, please find a circle. (Teacher invites one student to get a circle shaped thing from the bag, and the students’ eyes are covered by an eyepatch.) T: You get the right shape. The bag looks like a circle, right? Ss: Yes. ( T invites some other students to play this game in the same way. And students will deepen their impression by touching things in different shapes.) Step 5 Extension

Teacher leads students to work in groups to make a book that recorded colours and shapes in our daily life.

T: Boys and girls, from this lesson we know that colours and shapes are everywhere. Now let’s work in groups to make a book like this.( T shows her book as an example.) This is an oval. It is green. The leaves look like ovals. The kiwi fruit looks like an oval. Clear? Ss: Yes. T: Now please work in groups to make your beautiful books by using the cards and stickers on your desks. (This part is the production of this lesson. In this part, students’

understandings of these new words and sentences will be deepened. Students will get a lot of fun in the part, and their teamwork and creativities will be improved. At the end, Teacher will invite some groups to show and read their book in the whole class.) Step 6 Summary T: Boys and girls, colours ans shapes make our life more beautiful and colourful, right? Ss: Yes! T: Hope you enjoy beauty of the world. ( This part aims to give students aesthetic education.) Step 7 Homework Read the passage on your paper and finish the exercise. (The passage is about shapes in our daily life. It helps students review words and sentences that they have learned in this lesson. At the same time, their reading ability will be improved.)
