Book7, Unit4, Sharing, Warming up, Listening and Speaking The analysis of the teaching material and students:

The theme of this unit is sharing, which involves helping people and voluntary work. At the end of this unit, students are supposed to learn to share, and know that there are still many poor people that need our help. In addition, they will know the significance of doing volunteer work, in which their social responsibility are cultivated.

This lesson is the second period of this unit. In the textbook, the warming-up part is mainly a survey. Students are supposed to think of the good deeds they have done and then interview their classmates, during which they will learn the definition of “volunteer”. It would be better if they are given an example of a volunteer. So I make some adjustments of the textbook material and combine the warming-up part with the listening and speaking part which tells the story of Dr. Mary Murray, a volunteer doctor who works for MSF.

Our students are in the second year of senior high school, and they have commanded some basic skills of English learning. But they still need more practice in listening and speaking. They may have a lot to talk about helping others, but they may not know much about volunteering. Teaching objectives:

This lesson aims to realize the following objectives by the end of this class:

Objective of language ability: Ss will be able to predict before listening and listen for key information as well as retelling the story after listening. 2.

Objective of cultural awareness: Ss will know some background knowledge of this unit and the significance of volunteering. 3.

Objective of thinking quality: Ss will form their own views about voluntary work and build a stronger sense of social responsibility . 4.

Objective of learning ability: Ss will be able to evaluate their classmates’

performance in retelling. Important points:

Purpose of design

Time

This part is to remind students of their 8m

experience of helping others and know that helping others is not necessarily equal to

voluntary work. This part provides students with some information about voluntary work, which prepares them for the story of a volunteer in the listening text. Besides, this part can arose students’ interest in the interview and the competition, as they are curious about others and eager to win. In end of this part, they will know MSF, which prepares them for the listening task. The teacher will first show some pictures 17m

and a video about MSF for students and let them know some background information before listening. In this task, students first predict the content according to the picture and given words. They first listen for main idea and then detailed information. This part prepares students for retelling.

Post-listening

In this part, students are required to retell 14m Mary’s story according to the information they’ve got. By doing this, they can not only practice their retelling ability, but also become clearer about Mary’s voluntary work and her life. They also need to express their own views about voluntary work. It is designed to help students develop a sense of social responsibility and thus learn to share and do some volunteer work to help others in their spare time.
