Book 6 Unit4 Global Warming Reading The earth is becoming warmer---does it matter? Teaching aims: 1) To know about the global warming and use expressions to describe the reason and different attitudes. 2) To develop the reading skills like skimming, scanning and intensive reading. 3) To improve the awareness of energy saving and environmental protection.

Teaching procedure: Step 1 Lead-in T: Do you know energy? T: What are the sources of energy? S:...... T:...... are renewable, but .....are non-renewable. In order to reduce the comsumption of the non-renewable sources, people create a house like this. Do you know what is it? S: Greenhouse. T: What is it made of? S: Glass. T: How does it work? S:...... T: The glass traps the heat from the sun, making the air in the house warm so that plants can grow better and faster. T: But if we put our earth into the greenhouse, what will happen? (引出课题)

Step 2 While-reading 1) Skimming: (略读) Task 1: Read the passage quickly to find the main idea. (fill in the blank) The article is mainly about how global warming has come about and different attitudes towards it.

Task 2: Analyze the structure of the passage.

2) Scanning:(跳读) Read the passage quickly again for specific information. Pay attention to the capital letter and answer the following 3 questions. 1. What is the name of the magazine? 2. Who is the author? 3. What are the names of other 3 scientists mentioned in the article?

3) Intensive reading:(精读)

Task 1 How does the global warming come about? (para2-5) It is human activity that has caused this global warming rather than a random but natural phenomenon. The increase in the earth’s temperature is due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to produce energy. Some byproducts of this process are called “greenhouse” gases, the most important one of which is carbon dioxide. Task 2 Does it matter? (para 6)

So we must care the problem, because everyone is involved in this problem. Of course, some bad results will happen, for example, the habitats of the animals will disappear and most of the animals species will die off. What’s worse, we will have no place to live in. So we should take some measures and be aware of the importance of protecting the earth and try to slow down the process of global warming. Because we only have one earth, so all the people should fulfill our responsibilities. Only when we work in unity and cooperation can we make a different, so boys and girls, come on!
