Unit 3 A taste of English humour(必修4)
Teaching Design教学设计
说与写
一、Teaching content(教学内容)
Talking (p. 55), Speaking and writing (p. 23) 二、Textbook analysis(教学内容分析)
本节课的教学内容是人教版必修四第三单元WB中的Talking(p.55)和Using Language部分中的Speaking and writing(P.23)。其中心话题是“英语幽默”。说与写的部分设计了两个练习。练习1让学生讨论对录音中的故事的看法,说明喜欢或是不喜欢的原因。然后相互之间讲幽默故事。练习2让学生把自己讲述的故事写下来。
三、Student Analysis(学情分析)
四、Ideas of Teaching Design(教学设计思路)
This period includes talking, speaking and writing, which offer the students an opportunity to develop their sense of humour and learn how to write a humourous story. Before class, the students are required to prepare a joke or funny story in pairs. In class, the teacher and the students will have a discussion about what is a good way to tell a joke, and then put these ideas into practice when they tell their own jokes or stores. Before writing, the teacher can take The Story of The Drunken Chickens
as an example to discuss with the students the structure of a humourous story, the last line (or punch line) to make the story funny, and how to organize the stags in a logical order. Teaching Important & Difficult Points (1) Learn how to tell a joke or a funny story. (2) Learn how to write a humourous story. Teaching Methods (1) Create a specific situation to help students to develop their speaking skill. (2) Improve the students’ writing ability by practicing. Teaching Aids A multimedia computer Teaching Aims 1. Knowledge and skills Help the students apply what they have learned in this unit to speaking-telling their funny jokes or stories. Help the student learn to write humourous stories --- the structure, the last line (or punch line) , the logical order. 2. Process and Strategies The teacher divides the students into groups and encourages them to sort out the jokes they collected. Help the students to write a humourous story. 3. Emotion and Value
- 1 -
Speaking and writing make the students keep optimistic in life and experience the joy of success.
Teaching Procedures Step 1 Talking(P55)
Lead-in : As everyone knows, Humour makes people laugh, feel happy and relaxed. Laughing is better than medicine.
In groups, tell each other something you think is funny. These expressions below may be useful for you.
Useful expressions
It’s interesting that we both find … funny.
I burst into laughter when …
I found it extremely funny that …
I enjoy watching …
How enjoyable that was!
I laughed till my sides split when…
What’s so funny about that?
I don’t think that’s funny at all.
I couldn’t help laughing when…
I’ve never laughed so much as when…
Isn’t it amusing that…?
I can’t understand why you laughed at that.
T: Now, boys and girls. It’s time for you to practise. S1: What do you find funny? I enjoy Mr. Bean because he makes such wonderful faces as he does
stupid things. S2: I’m not surprised you like Mr. Bean, because all my family are crazy about him and cannot get
enough of his programmes. S1: We enjoy this kind of humour because my father loves Charlie Chaplin films. When he sees his stick and hat and that funny walk, he always bursts into laughter. S2: What I like best is the problems Mr. Bean has with everyday situations (like changing his
clothes on the beach). I laughed till my sides split when I was watching it. S1: Yes.I know that one. It reminded me when I stayed in England and I watched everybody try to change into their swimming costume, under a towel. It’s good that we both laughed at that!
Step 2 Speaking(P23)
T: Hello, boys and girls Ss: Mr. Wei! T: Have you prepared some jokes or funny stories? Ss: Yes. T: Very good! I’m eager to listen to your jokes and stories. But first I d like to ask you if you want to tell your jokes or funny stories successfully, what should you do? S: We should pay attention to our tones and intonation and try to bring out the humourous meaning. S: In my opinion we should not laugh at our own jokes but allow the others to find it fun.
- 2 -
S: I think we should not look too serious, and we can use facial expressions and some actions to help us.
S: We may pause in the story when we get to the last line(or punch line). I think this point is very important because it can draw the listeners’ attention and help them find the story funny. T: It is not easy to be a comedian. It needs many comic skills and of course much practice. But we just want to have the great fun, so just put the above ideas into practice while telling your stories. That’s enough. Do you agree with me? Ss: We couldn’t agree with you any more. T: Then share your jokes or stories with your partners and ask him or her to give you some advice. S1: What fun! I enjoyed that story. I always laugh at that kind of thing. S2: Me too. I’m pleased we both like the same kind of funny stories. S1: The punchline was good. You were wondering what would happen. So I’m happy that it all turned out well in the end. S2: It surprises me that John didn’t see the plum stone but Mary did. S1: That’s because Mary did the cooking, but John
didn’t look at the jam carefully. He just thought it was a mess and threw it away. S2: I think it’s very amusing and always try to read stories like that. They make me smile. Step 3 Writing T: We Chinese have such a word, “After reading thousands of books, you can write down excellent articles too.”
Now let’s have a try to write down our own funny stories to enjoy ourselves. Let’s first take The Story of The Drunken Chickens as an example to see how to write a humourous story. Please read the story and try to figure out its structure or outline. THE STORY OF THE DRUNKEN CHICKENS Mary Smith looked at the beautiful ripe plums. They would make lovely jam. When she had finished the cooking, she filled all her empty jam jars and left the rest of the jam in the pan. She would put it in the fridge when it was cooler. But just then the telephone rang, her mother was in hospital after a car accident. Mary picked up her bag and ran out of the house. Some days later, her husband, John, came home from a business trip. He had been travelling all day and felt like having a drink and a piece of cake. As he came into the kitchen he saw a pan with a dark red mess inside it. He lifted it up and smelled it. It smelled bad. Mary must have forgotten to clean this pan, he thought. So he poured all the jam into the chicken yard and cleaned the pan. Then feeling comfortable, he began to eat a piece of cake, When Mary returned, she noticed the chickens behaving strangely. They were running round the yard as if they were sick. She saw the dark red mess on the ground and went closer. When she saw a plum stone she went into the kitchen. Her husband was reading a newspaper at the table. Angrily Mary rushed up to him. “You threw
away my jam”, she shouted. “Oh, that’s what it was, ” he said, “I’m sorry but I thought it was porridge which had gone bad in the hot weather.” “Good heavens!”, said Mary. “That must be the jam I left in the pan, but why didn’t you throw it in the dustbin?”
John laughed, “It was a mistake. However, the chickens have enjoyed the jam, except that it has made them drunk. What are we going to do with these drunken chickens?”
T: Well, you can have a discussion with your partners about the structure of the story. T: Who would like to tell us the structure of the story? S: I think the structure of the story is:
- 3 -
The structure of the story 1. Mary has too many plums to eat. 2. She makes some jams with them. 3. She doesn’t have enough jars for all the jams so some is left in the pan. 4. It is hot. 5. The jam has turned into wine in the heat! 6. Some days later, her husband returns home, sees the remains of the jam and throws it out. 7. The chickens eat the jam and become drunk. T: What is the last line or punch line that will be the most effective to make the story funny? S: The punch line may be … Now what are we going to do with these drunken chickens? And it means we often find people drunk, never found chickens will be drunk. T: It seems that you have got to know something about the writing of humourous stories. Writing tips on P23. 1. Use a logical order: explain the situation, what happened and then give the punch line. 2. Read it through when you have finished checking for mistakes. 3. Read it to your partner and ask for advice. 4. Rewrite your story and put it into a class collection of funny stories. A Funny StoryOne day a man called a taxi company for a taxi to take him to the airport. He waited but it did not arrive. So he called again. The girl said, “I’m sorry the taxi hasn’t come, but don’t worry as the plane is always late.”“Well, it certainly will be this morning, ”the man said, “because I happen to be flying it!”←←The situationWhat happened←The punchline
Now I’ll show you anther sample writing: Outline/Stages in the story 1. Mr. Hills buys a hedge cutter made in China. 2. It breaks down and he tries to mend it himself. 3. The instruction booklet says it should not be touched “without permission”. 4. He decides to get a new one so no one will ever know

said the couple together. The next day the policeman saw the couple again. They were still with the penguin and he was rather surprised. “Why didn’t you take the penguin to the zoo as I suggested yesterday?”

T: I think it is great fun to listen to your funny jokes in this period, and it will be greater fun to read your collection of stories, as you all can find and enjoy humour in your daily life, and of course make other people laugh.
