Unit 1

Cultural relics Using language Teaching Goals:

1. To learn to tell facts from opinions. 2. To learn how to ask for or give opinions. 3. To learn to talk about cultural relics.

Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Warming up Purpose: To get Ss to know the difference between a fact and an opinion. What is a fact? What is an opinion? Can you give a definition to them?

(using attributive clause) Suggested Answers:

A fact is anything that can be proved It is a kind of information that can be used as evidence in a trial An opinion is something that someone believes is true but has not been proved Different people may have different opinions about the same things.

What is an evidence? An evidence is true information which must be facts rather than opinions.

Step 2 A fact or an opinion? 1. A VW Passat can go faster than 100 Kms an hour. 2. I think it’s the best car for a family.

3. I think driving a car is wrong because it causes damage to the environment. 4. I don’t like public transport because it’s so crowed.

5. I know that driving a car spoils the air in Beijing. 6. The Beijing Olympic Games will be the best ever.

Step 3 Read the story and give your reasons.

After the Amber Room was lost, what really happened to it remains a mystery. Many people say what they know about it.

What’s your story of the fate of the Amber Room?

Buried somewhere?

Burnt / destroyed during the war?

Hidden in a place?

Is what you said a fact or an opinion? Why?

Step 4. Note taking.

Listen to the tape and fill in the forms (P5).

As we know, people have never stopped searching for the Amber Room. This time we'll listen to what three people say they know about the missing Amber Room. Get Ss to share their forms and tell what are facts and what are opinions in the three forms. Step 5 Speaking. Purpose: 1. To learn how to ask for or give opinions.

(1) We often use some expressions to ask for opinions. What are they? What do you think of ...? Do you believe ... ? How can you be sure of ...? How do you know that? (2) We often use some expressions to give opinions. What are they?

I think ... I don't think ...

I don't agree that ... I suppose that ... Step 6

Homework. Search some information about evidence and opinion. Prepare for the next class.
