The question people are asking is “What is the space program going to cost?”
The fact that we cannot travel faster than light means that it will take a long time to reach those planets?

Step Ⅰ Revision 1. Greetings 2. Revision
T: Let’s check the homework. First I will ask some of you to answer the questions in Activity 14 on Page 120.
Suggested answers: 1. A “space tourist” is a person who would pay to spend time in outer space on a spacecraft. 2. Because the tickets are very expensive and few people can afford it. 3. Because it landed for the second time after flying to the edge of space. 4. No. Unlike rockets, which can be used only once, it can be used again and again. 5. We passengers would experience the floating effect, which happens when there is no (or low) gravity, for about six minutes.
6. No. Passengers would have to be very healthy and fit. 7. There would be 15,000 space tourists by the year 2021. T: Now let’s work in pairs and discuss these statements in Activity 15.
Sample discussion: For question 1:
S1: If we had $15,000, I would spend it on a three-and-a-half hour trip on a spacecraft. We would experience the floating effect, which happens when there is no gravity. It must be a most thrilling trip in my life. S2: If we had $15,000 I would not spend it on a three-and-a-half hour trip on a spacecraft. I would do something instructive and meaningful. Maybe, I would build a school for the poor children in the poverty-stricken areas. Or, I would award the scientists who made great contribution to curing deadly diseases. For question 2:
S3: Passengers who would travel on SpaceShipOne should have a medical exam to make sure that they are healthy and fit enough to take the trip. S4: Passengers who would travel on SpaceShipOne also should have a special training so that they can know how to deal with the weightless conditions. Before they start the trip they need experimental flights as well. For question 3:
S5: Yes. Because more and more people are interested in space trips, the space
tourism will bring a lot of money.
S6: If I were the leader of a government, I would not spend money developing space travel, because there are more important things to do, such as to build new roads or develop new fuels or medical science. For question 4:
S7: I think there are two reasons. First, people are so encouraged by the successful space attempts; they think space trips would be no more dangerous than boarding on an airplane. Second, they believe that the cost of the trip will fall sharply and they won’t pay much for a space travel. I feel excited about it.
S8: I think that’s all because of the advocacy of the commercials and the influence of some government’s tendency. I am not feeling this way.
Step Ⅱ Grammar (1) Features of noun clauses Ask the students to do Activity 1 in groups of four. Encourage the students to sum up the functions and features of noun clauses.
T: For this class, we will focus on noun clauses. Please open your books to Page 60. Now practice Activity 1 in groups of four, work together and try to sum up the functions and features of noun clauses and then report them to the class.
A few minutes later, ask the group leaders to report their summaries. At the same time, collect the information on the blackboard. T: Would any of the group representatives like to report your summary? S: I’d like to have a try. After the discussion, we think that a noun clause can be the subject, such as in Sentences 1 and 3. Second, a noun clause can be the object of a sentence, such as in Sentences 4 and 5. Third, a noun clause can begin with a question word, such as in Sentence 6. Fourth, a noun clause can follow the verb be, such as in Sentence 6. Fifth, a noun clause must include a verb, we can see from the underlined clauses in Activity 1.
Practice & summary of the functions of NC Ask the students to do Activity 2 individually. After that check the answers with the whole class and do some extra exercises. At last ask the students to summarize the
functions of noun clauses. T: Now let’s do Activity 2. Match the main clauses with the noun clauses. Make sure the completed sentences make sense. Give the students a few minutes to finish this practice. Then check the answers with them.
