Teaching Plan---Book 2 Unit 1 Using Language A Fact or an Opinion (Jianshi NO. 1 High School, Gou Enjian) 1.
Teaching Goals a. Students can tell apart a fact and an opinion. b. Students grasp how they can express their opinion and defend it in written English. c. Develop the ability of critical thinking among students .
2. Teaching Key Points
a. The differences of a fact and an opinion
Teaching Difficult Points
a. Opinion Writing skills b. The capability of critical thinking
3. The Type of the lesson
Reading and writhing.
4. Teaching Aids: PPT, blackboard, chalk
5.
Teaching Procedures Step 1. Warming-up Show students some sentences and decide whether they are facts or opinions.
1) Ice cream is cold. 2) Ice cream is high in calories. 3) Chocolate ice cream tastes the best. 4) Ice cream can be made from milk. 5) Everyone likes ice cream. 6) Ice cream must be stored at a temperature of minus 18 degrees Celsius.
Step 2. Reading
* Students read the passage and find out:
1. What is a fact? 2. What is an opinion? 3. What is evidence?
* Students summarize the difference between a fact and an opinion Definition: Key words:
* Students read the story and fill in a table.
NAME Jan Hasek Job A miner
PLACE A mine in Czech Time Republic April, 1945 What he heard What he saw Something exploded He saw some German soldiers putting boxes in the mine; and a week later he saw the entrance to the mine was closed.
What he believes
The Amber Room and some gold are buried in the mine. * Students read the passage again and think over a question: “Do you think it is a fact or an opinion that what is in the boxes is gold of the Amber Room? ”
Suggested answer:
I think it is an opinion that what is in the boxes is gold of the Amber Room because Jan Hasek did not see what was in the boxes. He listened to other people’s ideas of what might have been inside. So his evidence is an opinion.
Step 3. Opinion Writing
* Present and explain the concept OREO Opinion: Tell the readers how you feel about the topic. Reason:
Tell your readers why you feel this way. Example: Give your readers some examples of why you feel this way. Opinion:
Tell your readers one more time about your opinion or thought. * Students are required to write a composition within 100 words, based on the topic:
“Do you think it is good for students to use cellphones?”
* Share students’ ideas with the class. Suggested version: From my perspective, students should not have cellphones in school for two reasons. To begin with, cellphones are distracting because some students may play games rather than focus on the class. In the meantime, students could cheat on tests, which does a great damage to their learning in the long run. In a word,
it is not worth taking phones to school for students.
Step 4. Discussion * Look at the picture on the blackboard and discuss with your desk mates what message the picture conveys. * Mention Critical thinking Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. ---Marcus Aurelius
Step 5. Homework
Write a composition on the basis of the topic on page 16 of the exercise book.
6.
Reflection a.
Students are equipped with the concept “critical thinking”
for the first time. They may get keener and more skeptical faced with other comments on one matter.
b.
Time allocation is not proper enough to make students fully express their own opinions on the picture in step 4.
