UNIT 5 Travelling Abroad Reading and Speaking 1.

Teaching aims (1)

Students are able to talk with these words: Board, recommend, requirement, academic, occupy, acknowledge, comment. (2)

Students are able to

talk about the characters of Chinese, especially Xi’an culture;

compare the distinction between Chinese and American in some ways. (3)

Students’ intercultural communicative awareness will be enhanced;

comprehension towards the difference of motherland and outside world is established. 2.

Analysis of students Students are sophomores from Xi'an. They reached the age of 17 and their characteristics started to be distinct. They are sensitive and a little bit aggressive, trying to understand the world in their own way. So teachers are obliged to provide a healthy, promising perspective of the world, to make them love and respect the world under a relatively complete understanding. 3.

Teaching important points (1)

Cultivate students’ capability of organization and doing speech; (2)

Provide the context for students to use English in practice. 4.

Teaching difficult points (1)

Guide students to establish their topics and ideas of presentation; (2)

Polish students’ spoken language so that it could be more understandable.

Teaching procedures Step 1 Greeting and introducing

Welcome the new friends coming from America to get a better understanding towards China. As Chinese, we are obliged to be their guide. Step 2 Questions and answers

If you were in a foreign country by yourselves, what kind of feeling do you have?

Students would think and tell their feelings. Step 3 Step aside to welcome students to do the presentation. You miss your hometown not only because it is your birthplace but also because it is such a wonderful place which attracts millions of visitors. There are so many fantastic cultures in our country, we can’t wait to introduce them to our friends. Step 4 Students’ presentation

Four groups are to present. From after school activities, Xi’an cuisine, thinking pattern and traditional culture FOUR aspects to introduce ourselves to foreign friends. There are also interactions. Step 5 Summary
