Step I:

Lead in---a picture

Question:

What are they doing?

What can make you laugh in daily life? Comedies, funny play, cross talk are all different forms of humor. Today we are going to have a taste of English humor. Step II:

Review----the master of nonverbal humor Question:

Who are they? Is language frequently used in their mime?

And how do they do to amuse us? How about the verbal humor? How does verbal humor amuse us? 程

“Ring” is the punchline of the joke.

In verbal humor, we usually play on words to amuse us such as the use of pun. Pun is an amusing use of word of phrases that has 2 meanings, or of words that have the same sound but different meanings. Ring means “戒指”

as a noun, while acting as a verb, it has the

meaning of “打电话”。It is the misunderstanding that amuses us. Task ⅱ:

Are you familiar with this form of verbal humor? What is it? Riddle is a form of verbal humor which has a question that is deliberately confusing and has a humorous or cleaver answer. Task④

Let’s have a competition to work out the riddle.

Divide the whole class into four group and we will find out which group will get the highest score.

Task ⅳ: Act out the limerick

Try to enjoy the limericks and act out. The competition continues.There once was a girl Selina,

who wanted to be a ballerina. She went on her toes, And broke her nose. Then she became cleaner.

Who wore a newspaper dress to a ball. The dress caught fire And burned her entire Front page, sporting section and all. Limerick is a humorous poem consisting of 5 lines, the first, second, and the fifth must have 7-10 syllables, while rhyming the having the same verbal rhythm. 3 and 4 lines must have 5-7 syllables, which have to thyme with each other. Each group who would like to perform well will get 2 scores for them. Task ⅴ: A tongue twister competition 1.

A big black bug bit a big black dog on his big black nose! 2. Fresh fried fish, Fish fresh fried, Fried fish fresh, Fish fried fresh. 3. While we were walking, we were watching window washers wash Washington's windows with warm washing water. Tongue twister is a word or phrase that is difficult to say quickly. Students who can speak correctly and quickly will get 1 score for the group. Summery: all different forms of play on words in verbal humor to amuse us: tongue twister, pun, limerick, riddle…

Read the passage on page 22 and answer the following questions. Question:

Part V: Speaking---role play Read a short, funny story on Page 22 about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson. Then change the story into a short dialogue. Act it in groups of three —Holmes, Watson and a narrator.

5 minutes for preparation and 4 students a group. The competition continues and we will pick out the best group and give them congratulation.
