Task 2 Find the reason why English changed over time with the help of the supplemental materials(补充材料). Passage 1 Four Conquests(征服) of Britain There were four major conquests in the history of Britain, which not only changed the system of the country, but also influenced its language and culture. Ⅰ
The Roman Conquest In 55 B.C., Britain was invaded(入侵) by Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor(帝王). The British people fought like lions and Britain was not completely ruled by the Roman Empire(帝国) until 78 A.D. With the Roman Conquest, the Roman mode(模式) of life came across to Britain. Roman theatres and baths quickly rose in the towns, a network of highways was built, and Christianity(基督教) was also introduced to Britain. But at the beginning of the 5th century, the Roman Empire begun to decline(衰败), and the Roman rule in Britain ended in 410 A.D.

Ⅱ
The Germanic(日耳曼) Conquest After the Roman Conquest, Britain was invaded by three Germanic tribes(部落) from Northern Europe: the Angles(盎格鲁), Saxons(撒克逊) and Jutes(朱特) in around 450 A.D. The three tribes mixed into a whole people(民族) called English, and the three dialects spoken by them naturally grew into one language called Anglo-Saxon, or Old English. Ⅲ
The Danish Conquest About 787 A.D., the English began to be troubled by Danish pirates(海盗). King Alfred the Great led his people to fight against the Danes, and succeeded in driving them away. After his death, the Danes occupied(占领) the country in 1013, and ruled it for 30 years. Ⅳ
The Norman Conquest
The French-speaking Normans led by Duke(公爵) William came in 1066, and this conquest pushed England on its way to feudalism(封建主义). During that time, the Norman lords(地主) spoke French, while their English subjects(臣民) kept their old language. By the end of the 14th century, when Normans and English mixed, English was once more the main language in the country. But it became different from the Old English. Passage 2 The Sun-never-setting Empire
日不落帝国
At the peak(顶峰) of its power, the British empire took up 1/4 of the world’s continents(大洲), ensuring that the sun was shining on at least one of its numerous territories(领土), so it became the sun-never-setting empire. In 1620,a ship called “May Flower” took a group of 102 English people to the land which is called America today. Most of these people are Puritans(清教徒) who suffered from religious persecution(宗教迫害). This marked the beginning of Britain’s settlement(殖民) of the world. After entering the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution brought great wealth as well as a sharp increase of population to Britain. Lots of people found it hard to get jobs, which caused many social problems. With the rapid increase of prisoners(罪犯), the government had to build prisons overseas(海外). At first, they transported prisoners to North America. However, as America became an independent country in 1775, Britain had to find another place. Eventually in 1784, they chose Australia as their penal colony(罪犯流放地). Later in the 19th century, Britain expanded(扩张) its settlement to India, Pakistan, Bengal Malaysia, and Hong Kong in South Asia, Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa in Africa. The British empire gradually climbed to its peak. Nowadays, although the past glory(荣光) is gone, the UK still plays an important role in the world’s economy, politics and culture exchange.
