Students are not likely to summarize main ideas or fill blanks using their

own words. 2.

Students will possibly not finish the tasks within limited time for their unsatisfied reading speed. 3.

Students may have no idea what kind of words can be called key words.

Teaching Process Step 1: Lead in Teachers may check the students learning results and assignment by asking questions. Then ask two to three students to read their short passages with the help of the given pattern. 1. What is health?

2. How to achieve it?

3. Why most people are in sub-health? T: Most of you know the harms of smoking from your passages. So next time, if your friend is smoking, what will you do? But how to give advice?

Let’s learn it from a granddad.

Step 2: Reading 1. Read out loud Read Para 1 together and try to fill two blanks. Ask the students to think about the function of Para 1.

2. Skimming Require the students to read just the first sentence of each paragraph and underline the key words at the same time, which may indicate the main idea of that paragraph.

3. Scanning Read Para 3 carefully and find the target answers to the blanks. Read Para 4 and try to find 7 nouns which tell the harmful effects of smoking.

Step 3: Post-reading Discussion and Brainstorming Encourage the students to discuss with partners in a group to think about some solutions to quit smoking. Examples should be given before hand. E.g. Write down some encouraging words and hang them up to motive themselves.

Step 4: Assignment Compare the answers given by the students themselves with the lists on Page 19.
