StepⅠRevision T: Hello everyone! These days we are always bring smile to our classroom. Today whose turn to tell us a humour story? S1: It’s my turn. My story is a little bit long, but it’s interesting. Two drunks are walking along. One drunk says to the other, “What a beautiful night, look at the moon.”

The other drunk stops and looks at his drunk friend. “You are wrong, that’s not the moon, that’s the sun.”

Both started arguing for a while when they come upon another drunk walking, so they stopped him. “Sir, could you please help settle our argument? Tell us what that thing is up in the sky that’s shining. Is it the moon or the sun?”

The third drunk looked at the sky and then looked at them and said, “Sorry, I don’t live around here.”

T: It’s really a funny story. Drunks are very funny. Some of them will laugh, some of them will cry, some of them will keep on speaking and so on. But they really don’t know what they are doing during that time. They give people much fun. But they also are easy to be hurt. So don’t drink, especially don’t drink to be drunk. Ok, now let check our homework. Please turn to Page 20. The purpose of this Exercise is to practice the usage of “I will be better/worse if ...”, have you finished the Exercise? T: Good work! Your dialogues are very interesting. Some of them are full of philosophy. Thank you. Now we’ll have a reading, it is a very famous story. It once made fun of many people. Now let’s turn to Page 59.

StepⅡ Reading T: The reading task gives us another joke. The title is An April fool’s Joke: The Noodle Harvest. I believe that all of us know April Fool’s Day. Yeah, please read the sentence: “A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.” What does the sentence mean? S1: I think that the meaning of this sentence is that the thing is the same, but the way to treat it is different between a fool and a wise man. T: That’s right. Once there was an old woman. She had two daughters. The elder daughter sold sun umbrella, the young sold raincoat. When it rained she would worried that her daughter’s sun umbrella would sell bad. When it turned into a fine day, she would worry that her little daughter’s raincoat would sell bad. So she was unhappy all day long. Later, a wise man told her: “Why not think so: in fine days, your elder daughter’s sun umbrellas sell well; while in raining day’s your little daughter’s raincoats sell well?” I think this story can tell us the meaning of the sentence clearly. Or we can say that everything is made by one’s mind. Don’t you think so?

Ss: Yeah.

T: Now, we are going to read the text. What will it tell us? At first, please read the questions below the text; maybe they can give us some details of the text. Give the students one minute to go through the questions. T: Ok, what can you get from the questions?

S1: From the first question, we can guess that the story happened on April Fool’s Day.

S2: From the second question, we can see that the program Panorama is strange. S3: I think that BBC was making a joke with people. We know noodle very much. It’s impossible to grow noodle trees. S4: From the four questions I can see that this story gives us a way to treat something around us. T: Ok, I think all of your guesses are reasonable. Now let’s read the text and make sure whether your guesses are right. While you are reading, please pay attention to the answers to the four questions. Give the students several minutes to read the text and find the answers to the questions. They may have a discussion to check their answers. Several minutes later. T: Well, have you finished the text? Ss: Yes. T: What’s the answer to the first question?

S5: On April Fool’s Day, children make fun of each other.

T: Right. Why did people believe the program Panorama?

S6: I think the most important reason is that there were always many serious program on the television. And the Panorama explored problems and progress all over the world. So nobody was surprised when it reported the excellent noodle harvest. If the news was not from such a famous and serious program, nobody would believe it. T: I think so. People would like to believe those who are authority. Any opinions? S7: I think there is another important reason. It is that the reporter showed many noodle trees with the farmers pulling noodles off them and putting them into baskets.

T: I agree with you. We often say that seeing is believing. Any opinions? S8: I think that their cheating was true. It also mentioned two reasons for the good crop: an unusually warm winter and the disappearance of the insect that attacked the noodle crop every year. What’s worse, they still gave some other details to prove the news. If I was hungry then, I would be cheated too. T: Maybe. Well, do you think the advice that the BBC gave people who asked how to grow noodle trees was serious? Give a reason. S9: The joke was so big. I think if I was a reporter, I didn’t know how to answer the questions from those who were cheated so badly. S10: Yeah. I agree with you. At that time I would advise them to ask the leader of the program. You know being a fool is not a good thing at all. S11: If I was the reporter who had to answer their questions I would like to use the most beautiful voices of me to tell them that it was a Fool’s Day story, and then waited to be scolded by him/ her. T: I agree all of you. The joke was really a bit thick. It’s a difficult job to answer those who asked to give the some advice on how to grow noodle trees. Well, I believe there were still people who did believe the news. What would you do to find out whether a story like this was true? S12: I think at first you must think whether it is possible to have noodle trees. Noodle doesn’t have any life, how could they be grown? T: You mean that when we hear thing, we should at first think about its nature. S12: Yeah. T: Well, do you have any other opinions? S13: The reason that there were so many people caught in is that they forgot that day was April Fool’s Day. If they knew this, I believe that they would think whether it was true or false. T: That’s right. Once I was caught in by my students on April Fool’s Day. One of them was good at broadcasting. One night, when I was sleeping, my telephone rang. When I answered, I heard “Dear teacher, today is a good day. Your students want to choose a song to you. If you like xxx, please press 1, if you like xxx, please press 2. At that time, I was so glad, and thought that the students were too kind to me. So I pressed 1 on the phone. At once I heard a voice came ‘You are a fool’. And then came the laughter of some girls. I was so ashamed. I became a laugh-stock! After that, I think what made me caught in? It’s my greedy. If I kept common sense, and didn’t think I wasn’t such a teacher that was worth respecting by students, and I only did what I should do, then they would not be so successful. But I’m still thankful to those students, they were kind to me, or they would not telephone me to show their feeling to me. I should feel proud of them. Well, let’s have a listening to the text and then we will continue to the next step. StepⅢ Summing up

This is a summary about what they have learned. Teacher can leave them some time to finish the frame, if they didn’t finish it before. Or teacher can have a dictation about the useful words and expressions. For grammar item, teacher can advise them to remember some special sentences. So that when they are using the grammar item, these sentences can help them to have correct structures.

Step Ⅳ Checking yourself For this part teacher can give the students some advise to work in pair to discuss the questions. Teacher can also join in the discussion to find some new problems and to help the students to solve their problems. Step Ⅴ Homework T: By doing the SUMMING UP and CHECKING YOURSELF, we have gone over what we learned in this unit. Today’s homework is to finish the PROJECT. We will make a collection display in our class. After that, please preview the next unit. Ok, it’s time to have a rest. See you next time. Ss: See you.
