Book 9 Unit 2 Sailing the oceans Reading part 刘阳
Teaching aims Knowledge aims: 1.
Get students to understand the content of the text 2.
Make students know the some famous navigators and explorers, and learn their contributions Ability aims: 1.
Develop students’ ability of reading and grasp the main idea of the text quickly. 2.
Enable students to manage some key words in the text. Emotion aims: 1.
Make students manage the development of navigation. 2.
Encourage students to love the nature and explore it.
Teaching important points and difficult points: Teaching important point: Students can know how seamen explored the oceans before latitude and longitude made it possible to plot the position of a ship on a map. Teaching difficult points: How to help students understand the text better and get information quickly in a passage.
Teaching methods: 1.
Task-based teaching and learning 2.
Cooperative learning
Teaching procedure: Step 1: Leading-in Task 1: Show a picture of Columbus and ask students whether they know him and his contribuction.
Let students speak out the job of Columbus. Task 2: Three photos are presented to Ss. Ask them if they know these people. Ask students to make a research about them before the class and invite three students to share their work with the others in the class. Zheng He
Marco Polo James Cook
Step 2: pre-reading
Ask students if they can identify the instruments--- compass, astrolabe, sextant and the sea chart.
Students are encouraged to talk about whatever they are familiar with, the name, usage, invention country etc, and guesses are also welcomed. Thus, students are highly motivated to check their answer in the coming passage.
Step 3: While-reading
PAGE 1 Task 1: Ss are asked to skim and scan the passage on page 1 to find the key words to fill in the diagram, in which their speed reading and main information location skill are practiced.
Task 2: ask students to read page 1 part by part to get some details.
Task 3: ask students to join the correct parts together. 1.
To find the ship’s position at
A.
fresh seaweed, nesting birds sea a sailor used
returning home in the evening or 2.
A sailor knew that land was
fog nearby if he saw
B. sea currents or tides and winds
3.
To increase their speed, sailors C. the North Star and the sun
used
PAGE 2 Task 1: Go on with the second part of the passage. Similarly, a diagram fill-in is to be filled with the main information based on skimming and scanning. Task 2: decide whether the following statements are true or false 1.
An early method of calculating longitude was to use a knotted rope tied to a log. 2. The astrolabe was the first instrument to measure the sun’s position.
3. The quadrant was more precise and simplified than the astrolabe, but still had its shortcoming. 4. Up till now, the most accurate and reliable navigational instrument is the sextant.
5. The astrolabe, quadrant and sextant are different kinds of navigational instruments and they have nothing to do with each other.
Step 4: Post-reading
According to the content of the text, fill in the blanks. 1.
Seamen explored the oceans by using _________ and navigational _________________.
2. Using nature navigators could keep alongside the __________, use such celestial bodies as North Star to _________ their positions, as the sun overhead to ___________ by, as clouds over islands to indicate land close by.
3. Wildlife, especially _________ could tell how far or close the ship was to land and __________ could be used to show the way. Fog could help identify the _________ of a stream or river and winds direct the sailing. Certain tides and currents could be used to carry ships to the _____________.
4. Navigational instruments helped the sailor to find _____________. They used the compass to calculate longitude and find the ________ for the ship to go. 5. The ____________________ was the first instrument to measure the sun’s
position.
6. The astrolabe could tell the position of the ______ in relation to the ______ and stars. 7. The quadrant measured how high stars were above the _________ and the sextant was the updated version of the astrolabe and quadrant, measuring the _______ between two fixed objects outside the ship. It ____________ to be the most accurate and reliable of the earlier ___________________ instruments.
