Teaching Plan for the Sphinx B2U1 Using Language

In the reading process, I will focus on students’ long-term development and enable them to use proper reading skills and strategies. My teaching plan will include 6 parts. Namely: analysis of the teaching material, analysis of the students; teaching method; teaching design; blackboard design and assessment.

Section 1 : Analysis of the teaching material The selected reading material is taken from the second book, unit 1 of the textbook, which is rich in interesting and authentic passages with proper vocabulary, which will help improve students’ reading ability effectively. The topic is the Sphinx, about the origin and protection of cultural relics. The teaching aims are as follow.

Language knowledge: students are encouraged to make use of some key words like : restoration, archaeologist; monument, etc.

Language skill: practice their listening, speaking, reading and writing ability in different tasks. Emotion attitude: to develop students’ interest in foreign culture. By discussing the importance of cultural relics to build up their confidence for national treasure.

Cultural awareness: students will get to know the basic information of the Belt and Road Initiative and its importance in cultural exchange.

Learning strategy: help students to build their cooperation and communication ability.

2. Analysis of the students I will analyze the students in two aspects Knowledge base: students has possessed certain reading ability and vocabulary to finish the tasks. But differences exist among students, some may be lacking in certain knowledge base.

Life experience: with more TV programs like National Treasure getting popularity, students are informed of the importance of cultural relic and are curious about the Sphinx naturally.

3. Teaching method 1

Students will get a handout about the exercise of the reading material, after which, they are supposed to work together and present show their results. Task-based learning and cooperative learning strategies will be applied in this session.

4. Teaching design Before-reading

Teacher will show them a video and ask what the video is mainly about. After interaction, more information about the Sphinx will be introduced: its exact location and the origin of the Sphinx, during this process, difficult words will be introduced and the paragraph 5 of the passage will be mentioned, which will help reduce the difficult for their reading.

While reading According to the structure of the passage. Teacher will help them to get the information they need through skimming and scanning. Different questions are arranged. Students will be guided to figure out the logic by paying attention to names and times mentioned.

Post-reading A video named Speaking Sphinx is prepared to help make a summary of the passage, which is acted by the Sphinx himself.( this creative video describing the hardships the Sphinx went through

will definitely arouse students’ interest and encourage them to reflect what we can do to protect the Sphinx )

Shocked by the video, Chinese people who have long been partners with Egyptians are eager to know what’s happening. Then students are supposed to prepare their group work. Group 1&2&3 should work on task one and task two is intended for group 2

Task one:

Suppose the Chinese Ambassadors in Embassy(大使馆) of the People’s Republic of China in Egypt will hold a press conference about this heated issue. Work in group and prepare a press conference, you will need 4 reporters asking questions, 2 spokesmen answering questions, a host for opening speech, etc.

Task two: Surprised at the Speaking Sphinx, a group of Chinese travelers went on an adventure to uncover the secrets of the Sphinx. When traveling in desert, they noticed a manlike creature crawling on the ground and seemingly looking for something…that’s the beginning of your story.

(students are encouraged to make use of the passage information and act out vividly; necessary props are prepared by the teacher for their performance)

After ten-minute preparation, students will perform their result. Their performance will be graded according to their performance and teacher will give timely feedback and comments. Homework will be assigned to write an article about terra-cotta warriors. After learning of the story of the Sphinx, students may have a clearer understanding on how to describe the origin and basic information of certain cultural relic. Moreover, protection and restoration are repeatedly mentioned in the session, students may find 3

it easy to finish such writing.

6. Assessment Different ways of evaluation are encouraged according to the requirement of the new curriculum standard. Therefore, the teacher will adopt two evaluation methods. Formative evaluation: teacher will give feedback during the teaching process to encourage them get progress. Summative assessment: group competition will be held, so the winners of the class will get the rewards they deserve.
