Learning about Language Teaching aims and demands: 1. Review the words and phrases in the text 2. Let the students master attributive clause, especially restrictive clause and non-restrictive clause. Teaching procedures
Step I Lead-in 1. Show the students some pictures of existing cultural relics.
Besides these existing cultural relics, people are continuously exploring some new ones, for example, some time ago, archaeologists found an old and mysterious temple.
2. Show some pictures of the old temple and ask the students to think and guess: How is the temple like? When was the temple built? What might be found in the temple? Who built it? What was it for? What can you know about history from the temple? ……
3. Show the students a short conclusion of their assumptions and ask them to fill in the blanks according to italics.
1.
The temple, which is_____, is special and hard to find.
2.
Some people think it dates from 34 B.C, but some _____ (are not sure of) the assumption. 3.
Maybe we can find some____, which can be used to hold flowers, in the temple. 4.
Archaeologists think it must have ____ (exist in the world) for a long time, but they are still ________ (look for) evidences.
5.
The temple is the property of the whole human being, which means it _____ ___ people all over the world. 6.
Maybe people pray in the temple when they are fighting with others, that is when they are_______. 7.
Maybe the temple is a ____ (sth. given to a person) to the King or Queen.
8.
Archaeologists are ______ (do research on) the temple to know more about people and culture at that time. (By doing these exercises, students can review the words and phrases they have learned.) Step II Reading 1.
Just now we’ve made many assumptions of the old temple. Here is an uncompleted introduction of it. Please use the words or phrases to complete it. Let’s see whether these assumptions are right or not.

Some time ago, an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea. An American team explored a temple, which stands in an ancient city, when they were in search of an old tomb. People in the world think highly of this discovery and many look into it to find some truth about ancient time. There is no doubt that the city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization.
The temple which the archaeologists explored must have survived for a long time. It used to be a place of worship, for in the most sacred room of the temple, a lot of clay fragments were found. Archaeologists believe that these fragments belong to 15 statues, each of which represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the 15th century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remains of the 5th century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very
rare and precious even then. When the archaeologists removed and reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover
who she is. People may pray to her when they were at war, or when they were in trouble, but we are not sure. 2.
Read and answer the questions.
(Here the teacher should lead the students to use attributive clause to answer the questions. If the students still can’t do it, the teacher can give them some key information and ask them to use one sentence to answer, which includes all the key information. Or the teacher can give them an example. In this way, the students will have to use attributive clause.) 1) Who explored the old temple?
( an American team,
in search of, explore )
→
key information
An American team which is in search of a tomb explored the old temple.

the example
2) Where did they explore the temple? (on the Aegean island, an ancient city)↓
They found it on the Aegean island where an ancient city stands. 3) How is this ancient city like? (a high level of civilization, prosperous) The city which has a high level of civilization must have been prosperous. 4) What are the clay fragments found in the temple? (15 statues, represent goddess) These clay fragments belong to 15 statues that represent 15 goddesses. 5) What does the goddess look like after being reconstructed? (modern-looking, three feet high, hands on hips) The goddess who stood three feet high with her hands on her hips is a modern-looking woman.
6) Why was the goddess constructed? (pray, at war, in trouble) The reason why the goddess was constructed was that people pray to her when they were at war or in trouble. Step III Grammar (focus on restrictive and non-restrictive clause) 1.
Compare the following two sentences. (By comparing, the students may find out the differences between restrictive and non-restrictive clause by themselves.) The temple which the archaeologists explored must have survived for a long time. Archaeologists believe that these fragments belong to 15 statues, each of which represented a goddess.
(A restrictive clause is closely attached to the head. A non-restrictive clause is not closely connected with the head. It is separated from the head by a comma.) 2.
To make students get familiar with this grammar and be able to use it.
Task1.
Show the students a picture of the Amber Room and provide them with some information of this room. Ask them to use the information to make sentences, using which / that / when / where / who / whose with commas. Task2. Use a non-restrictive clause to describe one of your favorite things such as a book, a computer… (the students can choose anything they like) Step IV Homework
Write a short passage to explain what a cultural relic is in detail. Use non-restrictive clauses
and structures like some of which, on which, part of whom …
