Teaching Procedures Step I Leading-in and Warming-up Have students listen to and sing English song Happy New Year together. Have a free talk with students. T:Wow,what a beautiful song! Can you tell me what it’s about? Ss:It’s about celebrating New Year. T:Yes. When do we celebrate New Year in China? Ss:On the Spring Festival. T:How did you feel at that time? Why? Ss: We feel happy and excited. Because it’s the most important festival in our country. T:Yes. Do you know what other festivals we celebrate in China? Let’s have a brainstorm. Ask students to brainstorm the other Chinese festivals and discuss what people usually do at each. Ask students to talk about some foreign festivals.

Step II Presentation Show four pictures on page 9 and tell students that there are four pictures about festivals. Present pictures one by one on the blackboard and teach new words and phrases.Then have the class talk about them like this: (point at picture a) T:What are they doing? Ss: They’re having the boating races. T:What festival do people have the boating races to celebrate in China? Ss:Dragon Boat Festival. T:What do you think of the races? Ss:I think that the races are so interesting to watch.Have students work in pairs with other pictures. Then have one student read the descriptions with the pictures. Step III Groupwork Have students discuss what people usually do on these festivals and fill in the following form and ask some students to share their opinions with the whole class. Step IV Listening Practice Have students read the sentences in 1b and tell them that they’ll listen to a conversation about some festivals between Bill and Mary. Now,listen and circle T for true or F for false.

Play the recording and ask students to listen to the tape carefully and circle. Then listen again and check the answers in class. Step V Pairwok Ask two students to read the conversation in 1c.Then ask all the students to talk about the festivals in 1a in pairs like this: A:What a great day! What do you like best about the Dragon Boat Festival? B:I love the races. I think that they’re fun to watch.Ask two pairs to act out their conversations. Step VI Summary Guide students to summarize the lanhuage points they have learnt in this class.
