A Nothing was going right for Dr. Turner at the hospital. He made a mistake while operation on a patient. He felt sure he was no longer trusted and decided to change his job. One day he learned from the paper that a doctor was looking for a partner. The doctor, whose name was Johnson, lived in Throby, a small town in the north of England. A few days later, Dr. Turner went to Thorby, and arrived at Dr. Johnson’s home early in the

afternoon. Though old and a little deaf, Dr. Johnson still had a good brain. He kept talking to the visitor about the town and its people. When they turned to the question of partnership, it was already seven in the evening. Dr. Johnson invited Dr. Turner to have dinner with him in a restaurant before catching the train back to London. Dr. Turner noticed that Dr. Johnson was fond of good food and expensive wines. They had an excellent meal. When the bill was brought, Dr. Johnson felt in his pocket. “Oh, dear,” he said. “I’ve forgotten my money.”

C The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts(让……不舒服)

me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to. I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No

thanks.” When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some orange juice if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as Romans do.”

65. From the passage we can see that the writer is ________. A. a Chinese

B. a Roman

C. an American

D. a Thailand 66. In the West, people consider it bad manners ________ . A. to put less food onto his plate

B. to ask for something directly C.

to eat much at a dinner party D. to keep asking someone to accept something 67. A guest at an American’s dinner party should show his politeness by _________.

A. not eating up all the food offered B. putting more food onto his plate as soon as he has emptied it C. refuse the offer of food or drink though he is still hungry or thirsty D. asking for things directly if he wants 68.

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” means ____________ .

A. the Romans are people of good manners

B. people in the United States want to learn from the Romans C. Americans always do the same things as the Romans do D. You should get used to the local customs wherever you go

D This story took place a long time ago. But it has been repeated time and time again. Everyone is moved by the true story.

An old man was knocked down by a car and was taken to hospital. He was badly hurt, and during his few returns to consciousness(知觉), he repeatedly called for his son.

None knew where his son was. A dirty letter was found in his pockets. The nurse learned that his son was a soldier in North Carolina.

The hospital called the Red Cross office to find the young man. The young soldier was rushed to the airport in time to catch the plane.

It was evening when the young soldier walked into the hospital. A nurse took him to the bedsides of the old man.

“Your son is here,”she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the old man’s eyes opened. He dimly saw the young man and got great comfort. He reached out his hand. The soldier held the old man’s hand and offered words of hope.

All through the night the young soldier sat beside the bed. The nurse offered to watch instead of him for a while, he refused.

At dawn the old man died. The nurse started to comfort him but the soldier asked her,“Who was that old man?”“He was your father,”she answered.“No, he wasn’t. I never saw him before. I knew right away there was a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn’t here. I realized I was needed. So I stayed.”

69.What is true about the old man?

A. He was seriously injured and would die soon.

B. He knew quite well what had happened to him.

C. He once and again wanted to call his son.

D. He was knocked dead near a hospital. 70.When the old man and the young man met,

.

A. The old man wished the young man good luck in the future.

B. The young man said something to comfort the old man.

C. The doctors and nurses felt it hopeful to save the old man.

D. They both recognized each other at once. 71.We know from this passage

.

A. the Red Cross is something for people to find persons.

B. the young man knew he was wrongly called when he got on the plane.

C. the hospital had meant to save the old man with the young man’s coming but failed.

D. The young man might have the same name as the old man’s son.

E Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.

There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong. One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child’s leg. He never did that again. One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing. Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave. Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child’s level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well. 72. According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to punish them is to ________.

A. strike them on the bottom B. try to help them do the right thing C. teach them what to do D. take them to court 73. Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking? A. It teaches the child to hit others when they offend(使人不快)

him or her. B. The parent may get angry and hit the child too hard. C. Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything. D. It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right. 74. Which of the following can best describe the writer’s attitude towards spanking?

A. favorable (赞同的)

B. indifferent (不关心)

C. interested

D. unfavorable 75. From this passage, we can conclude that ________.

A. Good children always do the right thing. B. Parents should try their best to avoid (避免) spanking their children. C. Parents have no choice but to spank their children when they do something wrong. D. Children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked.
