(1) Fast reading (5ms)

The purpose of fast reading is to let students find some useful information and get familiar with the text by answering the simple questions.

Questions:

1 Where do most Australians live?

A: The south-eastern coastal area of Australia

2 In what city do federal politicians work? (Canberra)

3 What day is Australia Day? (26,January)

4 How many World Heritage Sites are there in Australia? What two World Heritage Sites are named in these texts?

A: 14; Cradle Mountain, National Park and Uluru.

(2) Skim reading (6ms)

Pair work

A student with his or her desk-mate finds 5 pieces of unknown information of Australia and talk them in order to grasp the main details. Students can use their own words to sum .Some students haven’t the ability, teacher should help them to finish the task.

(3) Careful reading (5ms) Discussion

According to the text, discuss these questions and answer them, maybe they are difficult

1. What kind of people do you think make Australia their home? Different answers: give students some prompt, the drills and some reasons

Some of the reasons is that: 1politics 2 lifestyle 3challenge 2. When do you think traveling by train across Australia would be appropriate

and when do you think traveling by plane would be more suitable? Give more than one reasons.

Difference:

Train: cheaper but slow, view the scenery

Plane: expensive but fast 3 Why do you think the population of Australia is so small when it is such a large country? Two reasons: much of the center of Australia is uninhabitable desert; another is that the government has strict quotas on how many people can immigrate to the country 4 Each year a large number of people become Australian citizens. Why do you think they choose to become citizens?

Hint: feel truly a part of their new country; feel secure; gain an Australian passport and enjoy the fights of a citizen. 5 Choose five words or phrases to describe Australia (5ms) Students may give different answers, ask some students to read their answers.

Imitate any one of writing patterns to write a passage about Feng xiang County, If you want to describe the whole county, you can imitate passage 1; If you want to write a passage about journey, passage 2; maybe you can choose other patterns according to your need.
