T: Dear students, you have been in YC middle school for one year. Have you adjusted to (been used to)your school life? S: Some yes. Some No.
T: What causes you trouble? Can you give me some details?
S: There are so many students in the cafeteria (canteen or restaurant) when it’s time for meals.
T: A lot of students wait in the queue (line), so we have to wait. What else makes you upset? S: It’s so crowded when it’s time to take a bath.
T: You have to take turns, right? S: YES. T: These are the two common problems in life that we face in high school. I believe our school will do something to deal with it in the near future. But can you tell me what troubles you most? What is the problem about? S: About our study.
T: S1, can you give us an example? S1: We have a of homework to do every day.
T: You are occupied with your homework, which means you are busy with your homework. Do you have any different problems? S2: I can’t get good scores.
T: You’d better cheer up and comfort yourself that if you go on working hard, you will gradually catch up with others. Please believe in yourself and you will get high scores in your study. Maybe you need some help. Actually, I have found someone, who can help you. Do you want to know who they are? S3: YES. T: In order to help you make good preparations for you school life, 4 graduates have offered some good advice.
G1: I recommend
(suggest)
that you should acknowledge
(admit) that everyone has his own weaknesses and strengths, after which you have should analyze
your advantages and disadvantages. (You have to know what you are good at and what you cannot do well in.)
G2: You should not copy other students’ way of learning. Most students do not learn in the same
way. Even if he or she is the top student in your class, his or her way may be not your way. His or her way may contradict
(be different from even the opposite to)
yours. You can learn from them but you have to find your own way.
G3: Interest is the best teacher. Many students aren’t interested in
learning. It is impossible for them to learn better. Therefore, you should be interested in what you are learning. Only in this way can you be an autonomous learner. (One can learn by himself without being forced.)
G4: Make full preparations before class and listen to the lecture
(teacher’s talk to teach a subject)
carefully. Take an active part in seminars.(meeting for group discussion) Follow your tutors’
(teacher’s) advice. Make a good learning plan. Every minute should be made good use of to study.
T: I hope you will try your best from today on. I believe with the help of the graduates and your hard work, you will meet all the academic (studying and learning) requirements and have a chance to go to your dream university.
Step 2 Writing
Now it’s time to show what you have learned to help a student. Please write a letter of about 120
words according to the instructions.
John, an American student, is interested in learning in China, who will be an exchange student in your school next year. He is curious about your school and your life. However, he is a little nervous about the life in China. Please write a letter to inform him of information that he needs, which includes information about your school, your life, and your advice for him to adjust to the life in China.
Please pay attention to the structure of a letter and use as many as words and phrases we have learned today as possible. Do not forget to use sentences containing non-restrictive attributive clauses.

Dear John,
I am writing to share my life in high school with you. _________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, ____________ Dear john,
I am writing to share my high school life with you. I am a student in Yucai Middle school. My school is very beautiful, which is surrounded by tall trees and colorful flowers. My teachers are kind and warm-hearted though they have high requirements
in our study and we are occupied with homework. My classmates are all very friendly to each other. We always help each other. Besides study, we have different activities, such as the sports meeting, the singing competition and so on. We all enjoy our school life and learn a lot in high school.
You have asked my advice about how to adjust to your routine life in China and I will make some suggestions. I think the most important thing for you is to make full preparations to have a good knowledge of China. You’d better do some research on the differences in life style and in academic requirements. Only by doing this can you
fit in
well quickly. What’s more, I would like to suggest that
it’s better to find someone who has the some interest with you so that you can make friends with them. When you are sad, they will support you and comfort you. Last but not the least, if I were you, when I met with difficulties, I would turn to my tutor for help. I believe the teachers here will be willing to help you whenever you are in need of help.
I hope you will take my advice into consideration. I am looking forward to seeing you in China soon.
Yours sincerely, Hyton
Step 3 Summary:
Though you may meet all kinds of difficulties and you may find sadness and challenge along the way, you will be welcomed by happiness and success in the end. It is hope that support you until you make it. Never lose heart! Sunshine comes after the storm.
Homework: 1.
Polish the letter.
2.
Preview the usage of non-restrictive attribute clause on Page 41.
3.
Extensive reading to review the important words and phrases.
Jess has been dreaming of getting the qualification to be a manager of BMW. Having analyzed
her strengths and weaknesses, she made preparations and then left her motherland with her visa to study in America. After reaching her destination, she settled in a hotel which was recommended by the travel agent.
Jessy got along well with her study in China. But she had to acknowledge
it was not easy to adjust to the new academic
requirements, some of which even contradict China’s. Though she was occupied with lectures and seminars day in and day out, the essays she drafted were still returned by her tutors. As for her routine life, she felt that it was hard to fit in, too. For example, she found English idioms difficult to understand. And it was impossible to eat delicious Chinese food because there were few optional
cafeterias for her to choose from, which meant there were
no abundant substitutes. In addition, she had to wait in a queue early for the bus that took her to school. What bothered her most was that she received no apology
when her sleeping was disturbed by a dog.
Luckily, with her parents comforting
her, she become an autonomous
learner soon and eventually got her bachelor’s degree successfully.
