module 4 unit three
A taste of English humor Analysis of content: This is the first period of Unit Three, Book four. The passage is about English humor. It tells about the life and work of Charlie Chaplin and the kind of humor we can all laugh at─nonverbal humor. This lesson is designed as a vocabulary lesson, which includes four parts: warming up, learning independently, interactive learning and presentation.
Analysis of students: When designing and teaching this lesson, I have to take into account the fact that students vary greatly both in their levels of English and the degree of their interest in learning the lesson. As the students may have known something about Charlie Chaplin, it is expected they will learn with ease and comfort.
Teaching Aims: 1.
Knowledge aims: Through teaching the passage, get students to know some knowledge about Chaplin’s life and work and his contribution to the film industry. 2.
Ability aim: Improve students’
reading ability and develop their different vocabulary skills, such as the pronunciation, basic meanings, parts of speech, basic usage and word formation. 3.
Emotional aim: By learning the passage, students will know that humor is particular to each culture. So the English humor is certainly different from Chinese humor. However, there is a kind of humor that may be enjoyed by all cultures─that is nonverbal humor. It is good that we can all laugh at something together.
Important points: To improve students’ vocabulary ability and develop their vocabulary skills such as how to master specific information, how to process the information and how to use the information to solve problems.
Difficult points: Owing to cultural differences, students may have some trouble in understanding some of the English humor.
Teaching Method: Task-based and student-centered methods. According to the new curriculum standards of senior high school English, students are expected to achieve the skills of: a.
pronouncing the words correctly; b.
mastering basic parts of speech; c.
mastering the basic usage and meanings; d.
making use of the word formation skillfully. As educational and psychological studies have shown that ability formation and skill development can only be achieved through constant practice. Without enough practice, none of
these can be gained. The task-based method has been proved most effective by many cases. So I adopt this method to teach my lesson.
Learning Method: independent and cooperative learning As is clearly pointed out in the guide book to English teaching in senior high school, English teaching should be beneficial and convenient for students to observe, experience, explore what is being learned so that they can exploit their potentials to the full and develop their own learning strategies, which will eventually result in their lifelong self learning ability. By independent learning, students will learn to work by themselves, which is often the case when they step into society. By cooperative learning, students will learn to work with others to solve problems that are difficult to solve independently, thus forming their teamwork spirit.
