That’s an excellent idea.

Step 1 Revision Check the homework exercises. Step 2 Pre-listening Retell something about the Amber Room from what we have learned. Now you are going to hear another two people talk about what happened to the Amber Room. Step 3 Listening (on Page 5-6) What happened to the amber room The listening passage Part A: Hans Braun’s story Hello. I’m Hans Braun, an old German sailor. During the war my ship was at Konigsberg. One night I was told to help our soldiers put some big wooden boxes onto my ship. They were very heavy and the soldiers said they were full of treasure. The ship went out to sea. On our voyage, our ship was attacked and sank. Almost everyone died. I had to swim three kilometers before I was saved by a German ship. Nobody had time to save the boxes. They must still be buried in the

sand. Now a group of people who are searching for the Amber Room have asked me to help them find the ship. Part B: Anna Petrov’s story Hello, my name is Anna Petrov. I was a mid a t the castle in Konigsberg between 1940 and 1945.One night in 1941 many trucks came to the castle with large boxes. The German soldiers took the boxes into the castle. Later we heard that a special art treasure in the castle was shown to important visitors. Perhaps it was the Amber Room but I never saw it. Then at the end of August, 1944, I heard something explode. When I looked outside I saw that the castle was on fire. The next morning I found some melted pieces of something that looked like honey. Russian soldiers later told me it was amber and it could have come from the Amber Room.

Step 4

Speaking (on Page 6) 1.After students listen to the tape, let them share their forms with a partner. 2.Discuss in pairs which person gave the best evidence, using the information in the former section. The following expressions may help you. Do/Don’t you think that...? Would you consider ...?

Why/why not ...? Do you have any idea about ...?

How do you know that? Are you sure that he/she was telling the truth? What do you think?

What do you think of...? What’s your idea/opinion of ...? What would you say...? How do you feel about ...? Who do you think was...? What are you reasons for saying that? I think/don’t think that... Sorry, I agree /don’t agree with you. In my opinion... It can be proved. That can’t be true. I don’t believe ... Because... I think ...is telling the truth because... 3.Let students write down a short list of reasons for their reasons. 4.Ask students to give a short report about their list to the class. Suggested answer: Hans Braun is less believable because he is working for company trying to find the ship which carried the treasures in the Baltic Sea.Of the three eyewitnesses, only Anna Petrov has no selfish reason for saying what she has said.In particular, she is not involved in any current effort to find the treasure. Therefore, she is the most believable. Step 5 Debate After the students tell something about some cultural relics, let them have a debate on the following topic:

Do you think China should save all of its cultural relics?

( Divide the class into two groups, first collect ideas, then one side will agree, saying “

Yes, we should save all our cultural relics.”

The other side will not agree, saying “No, we should not save all our cultural relics, only save the best ones.”

Both sides should give enough reasons.) Step 6 Homework Summarize the ideas for the debate. Prepare for the next class.
