Ⅰ. Analysis of Students:

Judging from the performance of my students, I find that students in class7 are quite active in the class and they are also quite interested in cooperating with each other, although many of them still have a relatively low level of English. They have certain abilities of getting and processing information and eager to learn English well. As for the English humour, they may find it a little difficult to understand sometimes, due to their lack of some certain background information and the differences among their English levels.

Ⅱ. Analysis of Teaching Material: The topic of this unit is about English humour, the purpose of this reading is to introduce students to English jokes. The first joke in Using language shows how different meanings can make something amusing, which is called “play on words”

while the second kind of joke is a short funny story that can make people laugh.

Ⅲ. Teaching Aims:

1. Knowledge aims:

a. To help students understand the two kinds of jokes and funny stories about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson

b. To help students to use the language by reading, speaking and listening. 2. Ability aims:

a. Students can understand the causes of humour.

b.Students can understand the real meaning of the jokes and its charm.

c. Students can make up the dialogue and act it out according to the funny story of Sherlock Holmes, so as to improve their speaking ability and pronunciation.

d. Students can finish the listening part to improve the ability of prediction and summarization. 3. Emotional aims:

a. To arouse students’ interest in learning English.

b. To experience the charming of English humor.

Ⅳ. Teaching Key Points:

a. Help students to understand the causes of humour. b. Train students the skill of predicting before listening.
