Plant exploration in the 18th and 19th century

(1)获取、梳理、掌握本文介绍的一些著名探险家和他们所取得的成果;

(2)概括、整合文章结构和内容,简述欧洲18和19世纪的植物探险;

(3)推断这些植物采集者的优秀品质并举例论证;

(4)了解植物只有适应了周围环境才能生存的生命历程,以文中介绍的植物品种为依据,通过小组活动挑选植物,比较、阐释植物对地理环境、人文景观的重要性,关注人与自然和谐统一;

IW GW Warming up Step 1 Ss watch a video clip to get a general idea of plants’

development, which may arouse their interest. T divides the whole class into small groups and gives the task to students---“What do you know about plants?”

Pre-reading Step 2 After learning the knowledge about special plants, T invites Ss to think,

“Do you have some pot plants on your balcony?”

“Do you know where these plants, such as tulips and roses, come from?”

While-reading Step 3 1st reading

Ss read the title and the pictures and

predict what might be talked about in

the text.

Ss skim the passage and fill in the

blank to get the general idea.

2nd reading

T asks each group to read the Step 4 passage carefully and get what each

paragraph is about.

Based on the 2nd

reading, Ss match

the topic with each paragraph.

Ss divide the nine paragraphs into

four parts in the order of time,

making clear the structure of the

whole passage.

3rd reading

Ss read the passage in detail and note

down all the important events about

special plants and famous plant Step 5 collectors with the help of a

when-who-what-result chart.

4th reading

Ss read the passage again and answer

the question---What happened in

these years? by filling in the chart.

Ss briefly discuss the qualities of the

plant collectors in groups based on Step 6 what they did. Post-reading Step 7 Suppose

three of you are botanists(植物学家),

and one is a captain. Now each botanist wants the captain to bring his plant home. But the captain can take only one plant, so each must try his best to explain his reason to persuade the captain into taking his own plant.

1. Write a report on the discussion and give your own idea. 2. Get some information about plant exploration in the 20th and 21st centuries on the Internet.

Supplementary reading Robert Fortune (1812-1880) represented the Horticultural Society of London (now the Royal Horticultural Society) as a collector in China shortly after the Treaty of Nanjing had brought the Opium War to a close. Through his use of the Wardian case, Fortune was able to introduce many of the best-known Chinese garden plants into cultivation in Europe and North America.

Père Paul Guillaume Farges (1844 - 1912) ,French missionary and naturalist. Born at Monclar-de-Quercy, Tarn-et-Garonne. He was sent to China in 1867 and remained stationed in north-east Sichuan until 1903. Although he had always nurtured an interest in the local flora and fauna, it was not until 1892 that he started to collect herbarium specimens in earnest. During the eleven years before he moved south to Chongqing, he collected and preserved over 4,000 specimens.
