The topic of this unit is “sailing”, which is not very familiar to students in the northwest area. The reading part is about Sailing The Oceans, the content of which includes the early navigational skills, instruments as well as some famous navigators in the history of human beings. The language skills and knowledge of this unit are based on the topic of navigation. The students can acquire and have a good knowledge about the history of ancient navigation and learn their bravery, confidence and the sense of responsibility from the ancient people through the passage.

The students are third-grade students of senior high school. They have little knowledge about navigation. But they are prepared before the class by previewing the passage and words of this unit and searching for information about navigation on the internet. So they have the desire to learn. Besides, they have mastered some simple learning strategies and skills. However, their reading abilities still need to be improved. 1). Students know some famous navigators and their deeds; 知识与能力目标

Besides, they are a little frustrated when reading the passage, for there are a lot of strange and proper nouns.
