Unit 4 Exploring Plants ----长难句分析之
区分
谓语过去时
与
过去分词
教学目标:1.学会区别长难句中的过去分词和谓语过去式
2.学会把此分析技巧运用在阅读的长难句理解、语法填空、短文改错及写作(自查)中。
T: We have finished learning the structure of the text, and this reading has quite a lot of long and difficult sentences. Let’s take a look at some of these sentences to see if they are really that hard to understand.
Part 1. How to deal with the long and difficult sentences? Example: 1.
Para. 1. Line 3. An important group of collectors were French Catholic missionaries who, by the middle of the 18th century, were beginning to set themselves up in China. 2.
Para. 8. Line 4. One of these collectors was E H Wilson who, in 1899, was able to collect a large quantity of seeds of the Dove Tree that Father Farges had discovered.
Two Steps to Analyze a Sentence: 1. Neglect all the “,”s and clauses (who/where/that/how/why, etc.) 2. Start from the predicate (verbs) in the main sentence, and then, other parts, and then clauses -“who/where/that/how/why”
T: Not every predicate is easy to find. Let’s look at more sentences from Unit 4 Part 2. Please analyze the following sentences from Unit 4, and find out the predicate in them and discuss the possible answers. 1.
Para. 1. Line 3. The first plant collecting expedition recorded in history was around 1500 BC when the queen of Egypt sent ships away to gather plants, animals and other goods. 2.
Para. 2. Line 6. In 1769, Banks collected vast quantities of plants in the land now known as Australia. 3.
Para. 5. Line 3. This invention called the Wardian case, allowed plants to be transported on long journeys. 4.
Para. 5. Line 3. Their expeditions resulted in huge plant collections sent back to France.
T: Are predicates in these sentences difficult to locate? Why are they so confusing?
1
Past Participle and predicate in past tense look quite the same. Now please discuss and work out the steps to find the right verb. Your conclusion: Step 1: Find the possible verbs. Step 2: Find the subject Step 3:Follow the one (verb) to one(subject) rule. T: Standard to rule out Past Participle is that mostly, Past Participle indicates passive, while predicate in past tense is active.
T: You may think it’s simple enough to do, but let’s try do the same in the long and difficult sentences from the national exam.
