语篇研读：本单元的中心话题是“航海、发现探索未知的大陆”，内容涉及海洋航行、人类早期的航海技术、中国历史上最著名的航海家郑和、辛巴达的冒险航行等。阅读语篇是一篇说明文，让学生了解在现代化的航海仪器发明之前人们是怎样航海的。阅读的内容分为两部分，第一页是介绍古代航海者是怎样借助自然环境的帮助进行航海；第二页介绍早期的航海者怎样利用航海仪来确定经度和纬度。语言技能和语言知识依据“航海、发现探索未知的大陆”这个中心话题设计和开展活动。

教学目标：

本课结束时，学生能够: （1）获取、梳理有关古代航海者怎样借助自然环境的帮助进行航海的事实性信息；

（2）归纳、总结出航海者怎样利用航海仪器来确定经度和纬度的知识信息；

（3）通过小组合作，上网查找、收集、查阅资料，激发对航海话题的兴趣，了解相关内容，并掌握话题相关词汇。

（4）通过话题学习，了解航海技术的发展，探讨学习探险家航海家的探索精神，培养学生的创新意识和自主探索意识，树立为人类文明和社会进步做出个人贡献的价值观。

学生学习活动：

（1）创设情景，熟悉主题，铺垫语言。请学生学习小组罗列出话题相关词汇，激活话题。

T: When we talk about the topic about sailing the oceans, what things will appear in your mind? Ss: seaman, seaweed, seafood, shore, offshore, onshore, beach, beach-ball, seabed, sea-bird, seagull, sea shell, seaside, sea water, seasick, coast, coastline, tide, wave, current…

T: Do you know something about the word navigation? Ss: navigator, sail, sailor, voyage, latitude, longitude, equator, horizon, captain, land, island, nautical mile, explore, explorer, exploration…

T: Very well. Since you have mentioned the word “navigator” and the word “explorer”, do they refer to the same person? Do you know the difference between these two? Ss may discuss and give their opinion. T: Do you know some famous navigators or explorers in history? Could you tell us something about them? Ss have the group work presentation to introduce the famous navigators according to the preparations they have made before the class. 学生学习小组通过课前的上网查找资料，分别介绍历史上著名的航海家。（小组汇报形式）

(2) 阅读活动

Fast reading to get the general idea of the passage. Second reading: 阅读课文，提取概括信息：古代航海家怎样借助自然环境的帮助进行航海，形成概念图。

Using the sea Third reading: 阅读课文，提取概括信息：早期的航海家怎样利用航海仪器来确定经度和纬度。

1 Find the information about how they used instruments:

2 How did they find longitude and latitude? There were two methods to find longitude:

1) throw a knotted rope tied to a log over the side of the ship to measure time and speed

2 )use the compass and complicated mathematical tables

What instruments did they use to find latitude? List as follows: Bearing circle: Astrolabe: Quadrant: Sextant: Scan the whole text and make a mind-map: (3) 创设情景：假如你是船长，将环绕非洲航行，你将挑选什么样的水手同行？预测你会遇到什么问题？你将怎样解决问题？

学生组队，并进行小组讨论以上问题，并给出解决问题的策略，绘制环绕非洲航行的线路。

(4) 课后活动：学生环绕非洲航行归来，召开交流会，和同学分享本次航行的意义和收获。

小组成员作好发言准备。
