A Teaching Design for Writing of Unit5 5 Nelson Mandela ---a modern hero Teaching Class: Class Six, Senior One Teacher: Minqian He Type for class: Writing

Ⅰ. Teaching aims: 1.

To know some information about great people; 2.

To master some expressions about how to describe a great person; 3.

To master some writing skills about introducing a great person;

4.

To cooperate with group members.

Ⅱ. Teaching focus and difficulties: 1.

To master some expressions about how to describe a great person; 2.

To write a passage about a great person.

Ⅲ. Analysis of the students:

Students in Class Three, Senior One is a regular class. Most students are interested in English learning. They are glad to absorb knowledge which is helpful to them. However, some of them still have trouble using English in a proper way because of poor basic skills. As a result, giving more chances for the students to discuss and help with each other is very useful for their English learning.

IV. Analysis of the material: This unit is concerned with teaching students about what makes a great person Nelson Mandela was chosen as the example of a modern great man because of his fight for fairness in South Africa. The purpose of this period is to use the information about Nelson Mandela gained in the book and apply it to Qian Xuesen, a modern great person by discussing and writing about his life and qualities. The students are familiar with great people like Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein and Qian Xuesen. However, writing a passage about a great person may be difficult for them as they need to use some proper expressions. Therefore, it’s essential to design more activities to develop their speaking and writing skills.

V. Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Review Elias’ story 1.

Ask the students to look at the picture and review what we’ve learnt last period; 2.

Ask the students to do a role-play in pairs. One acts as the reporter, and the other as Elias; 3.

Ask two pairs to have an interview in front of the class.

Step 2 Free talk 1.

Ask the students to talk about the pictures presented on PPT, with the help of given expressions in Chinese.; 2.

Emphasize some useful expressions. Step 3 Reading and blank filling.

Ask the students to read a passage about Bill Gates and fill in the information sheet based on the passage; 2.

Ask the students to talk about Bill Gates with the mind map. Step 4 Writing 1.

Ask the students to think about how to organize the information before writing; 2.

Present the requirements to the students and review basic writing skills. 3.

Ask the students to write down the phrases and translate some difficult sentences in groups. 4.

Ask the students to start writing on their own. Step5 Peer review 1.

Ask the students to exchange their compositions with their group members. 2.

Ask the group members to choose two compositions to check in groups.

3.

If time permitted, present some good compositions for learning.

Step 6 Summary and homework. 1.

Guide the students to recall and summarize the learning points learnt in this class and try to say them out, including how to organize a composition. 2.

Ask the students to rewrite their passages.
