Teaching methods
Discussion, cooperative learning and oral practice Teaching Procedure Step1 Free Talk
1.
How old are you now? 2.
How many subjects do you have? 3.
Do you think what you said about yourself are facts or opinions? 4.
What do you think of your life here? (Is what he/she said an opinion or a fact?) From these questions, we can lead to a conclusion that “A fact is anything that can be proved. An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved.”) Task 1 If you are the judge in a trial, which eyewitness would you believe? Why? Eyewitness A says: I (don’t) think …/ In my opinion,,,/ I believe…?/ He was unkind…
Eyewitness B says: At about five, I saw…/On the spot, I found…/ We stayed together until…/ He did it last week…
Step2 Reading Part1 (P5) Listen and answer: What is a fact? What is an opinion? What is evidence in a trial?
Part2 (P5) Read a man’s story about what happened to the Amber Room quickly. Do you think it is a fact or an opinion? Why? S1:I think it is an opinion that the Amber Room and some gold were buried in the mine because Jan Hasek didn’t see what was in the boxes. He just heard about what might have been inside. So his evidence is an opinion.
Task 2 Discussion: Facts or Opinions? 1. The earth is round and it moves around the sun. 2. I think it’s the best car for a family
3. From my point of view, the child will get home safe.
4. Hangzhou is the capital city of Zhejiang Province. 5. I don’t like the novel because I find it boring.
T: So we can make a conclusion that the language clues to help identify facts and opinions
Facts
Opinions What I told you is true because …
I know that you are wrong because …
They did it last year/ month/week.
I think that …
It is my opinion that..
My view is …
In my opinion,
…
He was very unkind / cruel
Last night I saw him …
I don’t like …because...
Step3 Speaking: A Debate in a Trial Step4 Writing
Suppose you are the judge. Write the trial report, using the following guidance. Para1 State the question of the debate. Para2 Give eyewitness A’s idea and evidence Para3 Give eyewitness B’s idea and evidence Para4 Give decision about which to believe and your reasons (Use some useful sentence patterns for the writing.) There was a debate about …
It is a fact that…
It is only his opinion that …
It can / cannot be proved that…
It is not good evidence for sth.
I can provide good evidence that …
I believe that …
Now we can conclude / decide that…
Sample writing for the trial report In today’s trial, there was a debate about whether Alice was killed by her husband. Two eyewitnesses gave their ideas and evidence.
Eyewitness A believed that it was her husband that killed Alice at home. He said her husband didn’t love her. He also said that he once saw them quarrel about something and even saw him beat her in the street. However, Eyewitness B held the opposite view. He insisted that Alice was not killed by her husband.
He agreed that her husband didn’t love her, but he said that her husband was out together with him for a trip on the day when she was killed.
Now we can decide / conclude that it is a fact that Eyewitness A saw them quarrel and even saw him beat her, but it is not good evidence that Alice was killed at home by her husband because it is only his opinion. Eyewitness B could prove that her husband was not at home on the day when she was killed because he was out with Eyewitness B for a trip that day.
Eyewitness B has provided good evidence that Alice was not killed at home by her husband. Step 5 Listening 1.
Now you are going to hear another two people talk about what happened to the Amber Room.
Listen to Part A and write down where the Amber Room was lost.__________ Listen to Part B and write down how the Amber Room was lost. _________ Which sentences in each story are opinions? 2. Opinion in Hans Braun’s story:
“The boxes must still be buried in the sand.”
Opinions in Anna Petrov’s story:
“Perhaps it was the Amber Room but I never saw it.”
“Russian soldiers told me that it could have come from the Amber Room.”
3. Listen to the recording again. Stop after each part and fill in the blanks.
