1.Teaching content: using language/writing 2.Teaching objectives:

(1)Knowledge objective: students can tell the difference between a fact and an opinion and learn some new words and expressions.

(2)Ability objectives: students can get the basic structure of argumentative writing.

(3)Emotional objectives: students can get some skill of logical thinking and pay more attention to our surroundings. 3. Procedures Step 1: present a dialogue and let students know “fact” and “opinion” in general.

A: Mom, the teacher said the earth goes around the sun. Is it true? B: of course, my dear. That's a fact.

A: So I think the earth must love the sun very much just like you love me. B: oh, you are so lovely. It is an very interesting opinion. Step 2: Let the students to discuss and give their understanding of a fact and an opinion. Step 3: Present some sentences and let them judge which one is a fact and which one is an opinion. 1. Summer is the hottest season for the north earth.

2. I think driving cars is wrong because it causes damage to our environment. 3. Beijing Olympics is the best one ever. 4. Light travels faster than sound. 5. I know that smoking is harmful to our health.

Answer: F O O F F Step 4: Read the passage quickly and figure out the answer to the following questions. 1. What is a fact? A fact is anything that can be proved. 2.

What is an opinion?

An opinion what someone believes is true but has not been proved. 3.

What is evidence? Evidence is true information which must be facts rather than opinions. Step 5: Present a paragraph and let the students read it and find out which sentences are opinions and which are facts. I strongly agree that we should go to work by bike rather than car. First, we all know that driving car does great harm to our environment while bicycle does not. Next, I think cars are much more dangerous because they can cause worse accidents. Last, bicycles are beneficial to our health.

Step 6：Let the students discuss on the problem whether Yuanmingyuan should be rebuilt and give their reasons. They can use the following expressions to state their opinions.

Homework Students are required to write one paragraph on Yuanmingyuan issue to express their opinions. Every student’s writing should include facts and opinions and you can imitate the former paragraph.
