Grammar: V-ing Form as Subject and Object

Analysis of the teaching material:

The teaching material is the grammar part of unit 2. The grammar is about the usage of v-ing form as subject and object. It’s the first time for the students to learn this grammar in high school period. Analysis of the learning condition: Though the students have studied in high school for 9 months. They have achieved certain English level and they have the ability to analyze some language structures. They can express themselves in English as well.

Teaching objectives: 1. Language and skills: 

The students will be able to understand the meaning of “v-ing form as subject and object”. 

The students will be able to master some rules of “v-ing form as subject and object”. 

The students will be able to use “v-ing form as subject and object”

in spoken language fluently.

The students will be able to learn how to analyze a language structure by themselves. 3.

Attitude and value

The students will have more interest in learning English and be more confident in English learning. Important and difficult teaching points:

1. The students should analyze the usages and rules of v-ing form as subject and object

by themselves.

2. The students should try to use v-ing form properly and correctly.

Teaching Procedures

Step1: Lead-in 1. Show students some English signs that contain v-ing form to draw the students’ attention of the v- ing form.

2. Show students three video clips that shows the use of v-ing form.

Step2: Observing and Analyzing

V-ing form as subject: 1. The students will work in pairs and make sentences according to the pictures given.

2. The teacher will show how this structure works and explain the two rules of “v-ing form as subject”.

Rule1: When used as the subject, v-ing form is often placed at the beginning of the sentence.

Rule2: Predicate: single or plural? 3. The students will read the three sentences together.

4. The teacher will introduce to students the following structures. Ask students to paraphraze the English signs and the above sentences with these structures.

V-ing form as object 1.The students will work in pairs and make sentences according to the pictures given. 2. The teacher will guide the students to find and summarize when v-ing form is used as object.

Situation 1: V-ing form used as the object of verb phraze verb+preposition. Situation 2: V-ing form used as the objecto of transitive verb.

Step3:Exercise1 Practicing and Thinking

1. The students will do some exercises. They will distinguish the use of v-ing form in the sentences. They will tell whether they are used as subject or as object orally. 2. The teacher will ask the students to observe the verbs in the sentences. The notice is given: some verbs can be followed both by V-ing form and infinitive, but they have different meanings.

Step4: Exercise2 Listening and retelling The students will listen to a short passage about the college entrance examination. They are required to take down the v-ing form that are used as subject and object. After listening,

they are supposed to retell the passage with the information given on the screen.

Step5: Exercise3 Creating and Speaking

In this part, the students are asked to make sentences to talk about one of your classmates, using the verbs and phrases.

The students mentioned by others will stand up and make another sentence.
