Unit 5 the power of nature By Jiang Yuerong Teaching aims: Ss are to read the key words and phrases all together at the very beginning of the class to have a brief but necessary review. Ss are well-informed through translating the Chinese version of the text into English,

and

are well-educated through encountering their own culture. All of the Ss will surely have a better understanding of the newly-learnt words and phrases. Ss are able to analyze the difficult sentences, structure of the text and purpose of the author. Ss can possibly compose a neatly-organized essay within 120 words by introducing Huaqing Lake, located in Lin Tong District. Teaching key point: Ss can fully understand the context of the text, and grasp the main idea of each paragraph. Teaching difficult point: Ss are able to appreciate the history, trait and cultural features of Changbai Mount. Ss’ translating, speaking, reading and writing ability are getting improved simultaneously. Learning a foreign language through a deeper understanding of its culture. Teaching facilities: A computer, a PPT and a blackboard Teaching procedures: Step1: Warming-up

Read the key words and phrases at the beginning of the class all together to arose Ss’ attention and concentration. Step2: Leading-in “Vocabulary is the heart of a language.”

Translate the Chinese version of the text into English for further comparison. Experience the cultural differences between the specific two languages.

Step3: Background information

Background information related to Changbai Mount. and the Lake of Heaven from the perspective of geography and literature. Each mountain, or river, or lakes has got a story to tell, emotions to express and distinctive culture to convey. There is no exception to Changbai Mount. (Moyan

to Gaomi, Jia Pingwa to Qinling, then Changbai Mount. to ?) The Fox of the Snowy Mountain The Dream of a Red Mansion The Story of the Stone The deep meaning of the Changbai Mount. Pictures which are relevant to the text.(animals, hot spring, waterfall, lake, Xi’an to Changbai, panorama, four seasons)
