the title:
Unit 3
A taste of English humour
Show
{
the part:
Using language
the type:
reading and speaking Design Intent:Ss can be clear about the learning content and main direction of this class.
Step 2.
Memorize and check
Divide the whole class into 4 big groups. There will be a fierce competition among the 4 big groups. The words will appear and disappear instantly. Whoever knows the pronunciation and the meaning of the word, they can just stand up and yell out. read the word and tell the meaning.
Design Intent:
1. Words preparation is necessary to a new lesson. Competition can arouse Ss’ motivation to read and remember the vocabulary before the new lesson.
2.
Get Ss’ focus quickly and naturally.
Step 3.
Lead-in and work in groups
1. Everyone gets in a group of 4 and has a number according to the seat,
Before the class, every group of 4 has a handout. Now they can divide it into 4 cards. Students of No.1 take
charge of the 1st card. No.2, 2nd. No.3, 3rd. No.4, 4th. There is only one task on each card. They have 2 minutes to read the card and do the task individually.
2. 2 minutes later, turn around and share their results in the group.
3.Group members discuss together: why are they funny? Or what are they in common? 4.The whole class check the answers and understand them.
5.Come to a conclusion of “play on words”, and then highlight the JOKES.
6. Look at the” play on words” on the screen and recognize them. Design Intent:
1. Independent study plus cooperative research.
2. It can get all the students involved in the class, because everyone has to work on his own. After all, his task is different from the circle around him. He can no longer just sit there and wait for others’ answers.
3. Different tasks make it possible that everyone has something to talk in the group because of information gap.
Step 4. Read and match Read some customer-waiter jokes on the textbook , match the jokes with the explanations and understand them . Design Intent:
Ss practice reading short jokes and get to know the reason why they are funny. Thus they can have a further appreciation of the art “play on words”.
Step 5. Read and speak (pair work) Speak in pairs . the deskmates act the dialogue out. 1 minute later, exchange the role. Design Intent: 1. Because of information gap, Ss will open their mouth to speak and will also read it carefully and automatically.
2.What Ss read in this class is from short to long gradually. In this way, it will be easier for them to read it faster and faster.
Step 6.
Read and answer
1.Read the funny story quickly and answer the question.
2.Read it carefully , answer 3 questions and find the punchline of the funny story.
Design Intent: 1. Check if they can find the punchline after practice several times.
2. Read for the important information in a joke. 3. Try to analyze the speakers’ feature by reading their words.
Step 7.
Role play and retell 1.Change the funny story into a dialogue and act it out. 2.Try retelling the story by using the key words. 3.Summarize and conclude Design Intent: 1.Reading is the input, and speaking is the output. If they can do this task, they can understand the content and absorb the language of this passage well. This is a kind of end-of-class test and sublimation as well.
2.After reading, Ss have something to say. So it can arouse their interest of speaking English and sense of achievement.
3.To enhance Ss’ understanding of the joke by retelling the short funny story.
Step 8. Homework 1.Write down the dialogue on your exercise book.
2.Read the funny story again and practice retelling the dialogue skillfully by using the key words.
3.Tomorrow we’ll write a funny story of our own.
Design Intent:1.The 1st homework is easy to finish, which will make Ss consider English learning is not that hard.
2.Get ready for the next class.
