Module9 unit1------Breaking records (Reading, speaking and writing)

Liu Fang I. Teaching objectives:

1. Knowledge and ability objectives: 1) By the end of the class, all students will be able to use proper reading techniques to find the relevant information about the sportsmen through individual work. 2) All students can talk about some people who have broken Guinness records via pair work.

3) All students have a good knowledge of how to write a profile for a magazine about a person who has broken a record through group work. 2. Emotion objectives: 1) Students will be interested in talking about the people who have broken records through many kinds of activities and exercises.

2) Students will learn the good qualities from the athletes and spare no effort to make progress and pursue their dreams. Ⅱ.Teaching important points: 1. All students are guided to use proper reading techniques to find out the relevant information of the four sportspeople.

2. All students can express their ideas about the athletes through pair work. 3. All students imitate the writing style of the reading material and master the basic principles of writing profiles about those who have broken records.

Ⅲ. Teaching difficult points: Students may not know where to start while designing a profile. Therefore, in the classroom discussion the teacher should skillfully lead them step by step to understand the basics of

writing an English profile.

Ⅴ. Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in

At the beginning of this period, I invite them to appreciate a video clip about two famous sportsmen ------ Cristiano Ronaldo and Phelps to introduce what is going to be learnt. Plus, I invite them to answer the following question after seeing the video clip. What makes them successful? After that, I make some comments and inspire them to know more successful people who challenge themselves and break records. Step2 Skimming (individual work) I guide them to have a general idea of the profiles of four sportspeople and complete the summary of their Guinness records. I’ m ready to lend a hand when help is needed. Step 3 Speaking (pair work) Work in pairs and understand more details about the sportspeople. In the meanwhile, students are invited to play roles in pairs. One is a reporter from campus radio station and the other is an interviewee. Have an interview based on the questions: Who impresses you most? What good qualities do you learn from the sportsperson? What they speak lays the foundation for the next part. During their performance, I’ll offer some tips and speak highly of their courage and cooperation.

Step 4 Writing (group work) First, I present more awesome people and their amazing achievements. Second, I share a profile of Phelps written by me with the class and guide them to have a good knowledge of the format, writing techniques and advanced expressions. Second, based on what they have learnt, I guide them to work out the requirements of writing a profile. Third, I invite them to work in groups and have a competition. At last, I invite them especially their group leaders to share what they have written in front of the class. At the same time, I make comments on their compositions, giving some encouragement. Step 5 Conclusion

At the end of this period, I use an inspiring sentence to conclude the class. Not only does it show us the beauty of language, but also it encourages the students to be positive and perseverant in their daily life.

Step 6 Homework

I ask them to finish their writing after class. Meanwhile, I invite them to share their profiles with classmates and exchange ideas to enhance their profiles.
