After reading the passage ,get students 1.To understand the meanings of the difficult and long sentences or their structures in the passage on P9-10 and then master them as well as use write down some similar sentences to those. 2. To get the meanings of some useful phrases in this unit (such as take part in,stand for ,as well ,one after another ,pick up , take the place of , play a role in , as a matter of fact and so on ) and use them properly according to the context. Procedures: Step One: Prepare this lesson before class：

(1) Go over the new words and expressions: that appear in the passage (stand for, mascots, athlete, medal, Olive Wreath, replace, gymnastics,

gymnasium, stadium, volunteers ......)

(2) Underline the following sentences in the passage, checking whether you understand them or not and analyze the first three ,then try hard to translate them all into Chinese. 1．Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th, 2007

Step Three: Explain the other four difficult sentence structures: 4．It's

本句中It's ...that ...为强调句型。

(1)强调句型的基本结构：It is/was＋被强调部分＋that＋句子的其他部分．

(2)强调句的一般疑问句：Is/Was it＋被强调部分＋that＋句子的其他部分？

(3)强调句的特殊疑问句：特殊疑问词＋is/was＋it＋that＋句子的其他部分？

①It was in this shop that he bought the book yesterday.昨天，他正是在这家商店买的这本书。

②It was yesterday that he bought the book in this shop.他是在昨天在这家商店买的这本书。

③Was it last night that the earthquake occurred?地震是在昨天晚上发生的吗？

until引导的时间状语从句可以用在强调句型中，其结构为It is/was not until ...that ...。

“nor/neither＋助动词/be/情态动词＋主语”构成倒装句型，表示“……也不这样”，强调后者同前者否

定情况一样。

比如，我们不应该伤害或欺负他人，我们也不应该乱丢垃圾。

(2)so＋助动词/be/情态动词＋主语，意为“……也是如此”，强调后者同前者肯定情况一样

The case of Guo Meimei had a bad effect on society, so did that of Cousin Yang Dacai.

郭美美事件对社会造成了很坏的影响，“表哥”杨达才事件也是如此。

(3)so＋主语＋助动词/be/情态动词，表示说话人同意对方的观点或对前文内容加以强调或肯定。

意为“……的确如此”; 对前面情况的肯定。

—It was cold yesterday.

昨天很冷。

—So it was.

确实如此。

如果前面句子的谓语既有肯定又有否定，或者形式不同，就用句型

So it is with .../It is the same with ...。

—The girl is clever, but she doesn't study hard.

这个女孩很聪明，但是她不认真学习。

—It is the same with her brother.

她哥哥也是如此。

(1)句中“not only ... but ...”结构意为“不仅……，而且……”，引导并列结构; 其中but后省略了also。

(2)not only ... but (also) ...连接的两个并列成分作主语时，谓语动词的人称与数遵循“就近原则”。

(3)not only ... but (also) ...连接两个并列分句，且not only位于句首时，

其所在的分句需使用部分倒装。

(即not only句倒装）
